Advice I’d give to anyone in their 20s: Build an audience online. Divert them to an email list. Post weekly essays. Do it for a year or more. After you do that, you can literally do whatever you want for the rest of your life.

Everything is art. Business is art. Tweeting is art. Sales is art. Pricing is art. Negotiating is art. Copywriting is art. Hiring is art. Storytelling is art. Launching is art. Naming things is art. Shipping is art. Create more art.

Writing is thinking. And this is how it should be! You and AI are thinking at the same time, but you are the primary person here.
For years, maybe a decade, I've wanted to build a writing tool that just did a few things I couldn't find anywhere else. A system that mimicked how I think when I write. A system that provided clear affordances, features, and places to do the things I wanted to do. A way to play with my writing as I'm writing it. A way to settle into just the right way to say something. It never made sense to make it a 37signals product because it's not commercially viable, nor would it be worth pulling people off their other work to hack on this. Plus, it would have taken months the old way. So this weekend I just made it myself, with Claude's help. It's called Write_On and the short video walks you through it. Essentially it's "alternative control" at the word, sentence, and paragraph level, plus a way to dim stuff back, and stash stuff near by. Not version control, but alternative control. You'll see what I mean when you watch the video below. So here it is. Write_On.

Should be adopted by everyone! Orgs, teams, and even individuals.
We instituted an official AI Writing Policy at @Clay. Massive thanks to @sophiebits on our engineering team who wrote this. Originally this was just for eng, but other teams found it so helpful we expanded it company-wide. Here are the four guiding principles: 1. You must stand behind every idea and sentence It is your responsibility to make sure that the entire document is representative of your own thoughts before you share it. 2. Writing is thinking Spending time on the writing process teaches you more about your topic. If you circumvent this process, you will walk away with a poorer understanding of the subject matter. 3. More time should be spent writing a document than consuming it If you generate a document from a short prompt then ask your readers to go through the longer output, you are disrespecting their time. They can talk to ChatGPT themselves if they want to. 4. Longer is not better AI makes it easy to generate long docs, and it loves padding them with sentences that say nothing. If you're producing docs from a short prompt, consider just sharing the prompt. You can read (and borrow) the full policy below. Hopefully we all communicate a bit more clearly now :)

The only purpose

The point of man is to build, create, and improve the lives of others. The number on the screen is not relevant.

We have Minimalist maximalism. Now we have vibe-codism in design.

35 years ago I did it all myself. Wrote, built, sold, and released software solo. 25 years ago I did all the design myself. Sketches, then HTML, then CSS. 15 years ago I still did some hands on design, but mostly directed others to implement my vision. 5 years ago I primarily directed others. My "I can do it myself" muscles had atrophied. Today, I feel like I'm back to the beginning. Able to write and design software entirely by myself. And having an elite team of others who can do the same thing is an enormous multipler. Wild how massive advancements can propel you FORWARD by bringing BACK capabilities you lost along the way. Full circle feels more like an arrow.

Making products. Deciding what matters, what doesn't. Developing insights into behaviors. Understanding what people are already doing, how their days actually unfold, where the hassles are, where the emotion is. Feeling what relief and satisfaction and delight feels like. Study awe. Discover the potent point where fun+utility swirl together. Code was always in service of the things above. And 1000 other things. Now you can get to focus on the things themselves. No more abstrations.

I constantly ask my team to join X.
i was having dinner with someone recently who asked why i spend so much time reading & posting on x. she had a pretty negative perception of the platform mostly shaped by the mainstream narrative around it. my answer was simple. x is where the future gets beta tested. you basically get to watch ppl build things, talk through ideas, show off stuff, & argue about where everything is going, way way before it reaches anyone else. there really isn’t another surface on the internet quite like it.

Soon we will realise again.
Software has never been about writing code. It’s always been about giving people more hands, limbs, and minds.

No one is going to care about the underlying AI model soon, especially for consumers. The models are already good enough for most of what people need. What consumers want is for AI to be useful, easy to access, and FREE or bundled into something they already pay for. Clayton Christensen and Michael Raynor described this shift in the figure below which is in their book The Innovator’s Solution. When a product isn’t good enough, performance wins. Once it is good enough, convenience and cost start to matter more. The winning question may soon be less Whose model is best? and more Why would I pay separately for this?

And then people will demand will handcrafted things.
Very soon, UI will be generated on the fly. In fact, every screen you’ll see on your screen will be generated by AI.

A CS undergrad asked me where he could have most effect in the AI age. I said probably at either extreme: either close to the technology, actually making LLMs, or close to the customer, using AI to give them exactly what they want. Or maybe both if you can stretch that far.

Best time to learn, build, try out anything.
ego is going to be the career-killer of the next decade. experienced people too stubborn to learn. polished people too cool to be cringe. people who take pride in being on the edge hiding how behind they are. know nothing! learn everything! be free!

The vast majority of large companies survive purely by launching things and discovering what works by Process of Elimination. There is no rhyme or reason -- or conviction -- in anything they do.

AI can create great interfaces, but only humans can great experiences.
you need to hire more designers you probably think you don't need to because of ai but ai is the exact reason why you need to great designers are difficult to hire though so you probably won't hire more but you really need to
