A lot of what people call “standards” are just preferences that became socially respectable.
Someone says they have standards because they only date people with money, a certain body type, a particular job or a certain level of education.
But if society suddenly stopped rewarding those things with status, some of those “standards” would disappear too.
Not every preference comes from personal conviction. Some of them are just things we’ve learned to desire because everyone around us treats them as valuable.
