I do wish people would lose the idea that benchmarking careers to when you graduated your PhD is sensible Medics can take their PhD at almost any point along their clinical training (which takes more than a decade - and is extended if part-time academic posts are taken)

This stuff plays out every single day. Patients lose. GPs can’t do their core work and are overwhelmed and often too busy to call out. This is a harm which is going uncounted and unappreciated. If our leaders cared about sustainable GP - this is where you need to look
Hi @NAOorguk and @NHSEngland , this scenario perfectly explains why useless clinical productivity is rising inexorably while efficiency is plummeting downwards at an alarming rate

Documents obtained by The Sunday Times, require teams to discuss final reports with NHS England. The rules mandate length of reports, number of recommendations and ban alerting media or making recommendations to local hospitals where they discover local problems.
🚨 EXC: NHS England has suppressed the work of investigators carrying out dozens of national clinical audits. NHSE has stopped investigators alerting media, watered down recommendations and limited the way their reports are written, published and used: thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/a…

I’m not a BMA member, but this statement is one I support: Reducing funding for clinical academics when numbers are already in decline fails to recognise their contribution to the health & wealth of the UK. The financial saving is minimal but I fear the costs will be substantial
Responding to @officestudents guidance from the Secretary of State for Education setting out funding for 2026-27 for universities that imposes cuts to funding for medical academics: bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/…

I find myself needing to repost this thread I wrote in 2024 as it still (sadly) seems relevant. If we want research-informed care and education, we need researchers…
There is a crisis in clinical academia in the UK. We talk of the need to expand medical schools, embed research into the NHS to improve care, & the importance of a vibrant life sciences sector for the economy of the UK, & yet we seem unable to tackle the underlying issues 1/9

When it comes to dementia prevention and/or the effects of treatment, my field seems completely unable to exercise a healthy degree of scepticism. Get the shingles vaccine because shingles is horribly painful. Don’t expect it to reduce your dementia risk!
Have you heard the shingles vaccine cuts the risk of dementia by one fifth? New analysis from last week suggests this may not be true at all So why did so many people present this as fact, and why do so many scientists keep bungling the messaging? munro-link.alasdairmunro.wor…

1/ Congratulations to our UK colleagues on this landmark @NEJM study: “Interleukin 10 Autoantibodies and HLA DRB1*01:03 in IBD”nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE… A powerful example of how discoveries from rare monogenic #VEOIBD can illuminate mechanisms relevant to common #IBD.

NEW: Scientists have solved a decades-old mystery behind inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The team uncovered how a known genetic risk factor drives harmful inflammation - a discovery that could help pave the way for faster diagnosis and more targeted treatments. ox.ac.uk/news/2026-06-10-dec…
