The change in status of Flo Balogun is in many ways consistent with the way FIFA operates in general -- a lot of rules, many of which seem unnecessary, but at the end of the day there is a smoke-filled room with a few guys who are given the authority to make decisions however they see fit without too much regard for what's written down. Sequence of Events: No foul is called on the play by the referee in real time. VAR notifies the Referee to review the video for possible foul. VAR shows Referee the incident in slow-motion, which is not appropriate under rules of VAR use -- replay should only have been show in regular speed. Balogun is then given a straight red even though the foul was in the process of making a sporting play and his foot had to come down somewhere -- he could not keep it suspended in the air to avoid contact. Match suspension of one game is mandatory for straight red card. Not subject to limited appeal provided for in the Disciplinary Code. Appeals are generally limited to mistakes by the referee such as mis-identification of the player at fault. BUT, there is a body referred to as a "Disciplinary Committee." It and the "Appeals Committee" are collectively referred to as "FIFA judicial bodies" in various parts of the Code. 31. COMPOSITION OF THE FIFA JUDICIAL BODIES In the context of this Code, the FIFA judicial bodies are: a)  the Disciplinary Committee; b)  the Appeal Committee. The FIFA judicial bodies shall consist of a chairperson, a deputy chairperson and an unspecified number of members. The Congress elects, upon the proposal of the Council, the chairpersons, deputy chairpersons and other members of the FIFA judicial bodies for a period of four years. As for reviewing "sanctions" against any one under the disciplinary code -- other than for match-fixing -- there is the following: 27. SUSPENSION OF IMPLEMENTATION OF DISCIPLINARY MEASURES The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure. By suspending the implementation of the sanction, the judicial body subjects the person sanctioned to a probationary period of one to four years. If the person benefiting from a suspended sanction commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked by the judicial body and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement. Disciplinary measures relating to match manipulation cannot be suspended. So there you have it. Very typical for FIFA -- the rules are what they say the rules are in writing unless they go behind closed doors and then come out what an explanation of what the rules really are. I think they got this right here -- there were problems with how the red card was handled. But I think they were more embarrassed by the fact that Messi didn't even get a yellow for a more serious foul, and the only way to stop more showings around the world of the comparisons between the two was to suspend the match penalty for Balogun.

Most parents think the “best” youth football/soccer coach is the loudest screamer on the sidelines because that’s all they see on TV and in movies. They’re completely missing what actually matters when coaching children. The real basics are: 1️⃣ Connection – Kids play for people they trust, not people who yell 2️⃣ Positive Role Model – You are their example of how to behave. 3️⃣ Respect – Treat every child with dignity, regardless of talent 4️⃣ Care – Show them you genuinely care about them as people, not just players Bonus (because these are just as important): 5️⃣ Patience – Children develop at different speeds 6️⃣ Encouragement – Confidence is built with “you’ve got this,” not fear Yelling might look dramatic on camera. But connection, respect and care actually develop kids and make them love the game for life. ⚽❤️ Parents and coaches, what’s one thing you wish more people understood about youth coaching?

NCAA just proposed a 5-year eligibility clock for D-I athletes. Meanwhile, clubs across the country are dragging U12 players to showcase tournaments because "college coaches might be watching." They won't be. Your kid is 12. The recruiting window just got wider, not narrower. Spend that $2,000 tournament trip on extra training instead. #YouthSoccer #NCAA

The NCAA is exploring a significant change to its eligibility rule, sources tell @YahooSports. The proposal creates an age-based standard: Athletes would have 5 years of eligibility from their 19th birthday or HS graduation. No redshirts or waivers. bit.ly/3POqo2D

The NCAA wants to expand the tournament so Wisconsin can lose to Auburn instead of High Point and Siena can never even get the chance to take a double-digit lead on Duke.

Arizona is going to go 32-2 with two losses: at Allen Fieldhouse by four, and in OT vs. Tx Tech when their best frontcourt piece was out hurt. They have been college basketball’s best team from opening night when they upset Florida to Selection Sunday. They should be 1 overall.

I didn’t always see eye to eye with Coach Belichick based on how things went for me — but him NOT making the Hall of Fame on the first ballot is insane. Deflategate was a manufactured controversy. If an 8x Super Bowl Champion and 2x Coach of the Year isn’t first-ballot, the voters are broken and the system needs to be blown up. Respect greatness. Period. 🐐

Nah. Hope Notre Dame stays independent forever. Hope more teams follow that. Conferences suck
Stephen A. Smith went on a rant like only he can about Notre Dame’s automatic inclusion in the College Football Playoff if it’s ranked in the top 12 at the end of the season. “This is sickening…Bump Notre Dame. Get your ass in a conference and compete like everybody else.”
