Nearly 70,000 Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa compound this year, marking an all-time annual high since East Jerusalem was occupied in 1967. Muslim worshippers have been barred from entering the compound as settlers tour under the protection of Israeli forces, a practice backed by Itamar Ben-Gvir who himself has repeatedly stormed the site, provoking Palestinians and Muslims around the world. This essay, written by Nazmi Jubeh and published in the Journal of Palestine Studies in Winter of 2016, argues that Israel's recent and recurrent violation of the status quo at Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem's one critical episode in a decades-long series aimed at gaining control of the area. This paper also seeks to show that although tension in Jerusalem has reached the boiling point, the conflict is not merely a matter of who controls the contested area. Over 100 protesters were arrested near the United Nations in New York on Thursday ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the General Assembly. The sit-in, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, denounced Netanyahu for perpetrating a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, building more illegal settlements in the West Bank, occupying parts of Lebanon and bombing Iran alongside the United States. A new UNCTAD report says Gaza is facing the world’s most severe economic crisis on record, with more than 90% of economic establishments destroyed or damaged and over 90% of working-age Palestinians unemployed. The report estimates that $71.5 billion will be needed for recovery and reconstruction, while housing, agriculture, health and education have all suffered extensive destruction. It also warns that Israeli policies in the occupied West Bank are deepening economic fragmentation, displacement and inequality.

Fifteen aid workers died in a hail of over 800 bullets; by the time dawn broke, Israeli bulldozers were burying the ambulances, seeking to conceal evidence of the attack.
