Interviewed a Palestinian prisoner the other day, and he said something that really stuck with me. He said people try to get you to think that being "pragmatic" means changing your goals. This is liberal talk. Remember, pragmatism applies only to strategy and tactics.

My issue with the JVP protest isn’t that it was “performative.” Everything about protest has a performative dimension. My issue is what exactly was being performed. Politicians voluntarily getting arrested by the NYPD creates the image that they are powerless protesters confronting some external authority. But they are elected officials. If their concern is that the NYPD arrests people protesting Netanyahu while Netanyahu himself walks freely through New York, then why isn’t the demand directed at the political leadership responsible for the NYPD? Where is the demand to disband the SRG? Where is the accountability for the police leadership? Where is the confrontation with City Hall over police repression? Those demands were perfectly fashionable when Eric Adams was mayor. They shouldn’t disappear because a socialist now occupies City Hall. And there is something particularly perverse about turning arrest itself into the spectacle. Ordinary Palestinians and organizers get arrested without celebrities beside them, photographers documenting their bravery, elected officials amplifying them, or organizations turning their arrests into glossy press releases. A Palestinian comrade of mine was arrested that same day after being attacked by a Zionist. Where was this attention for him? The question is why elected officials are performing powerlessness instead of exercising the power they actually have. If the NYPD is the institution arresting protesters, protecting Netanyahu’s movement through the city, and determining how dissent is policed, then changing who gets ceremonially arrested by that institution is not enough. Stop normalizing the repression. Challenge the people who control it.

I’ll probably make a list at some point but one thing I feel is conspicuously missing is Midnight Mass. Mike Flanagan can be hit or miss and for some reason is a divisive figure in the horror genre but Midnight Mass is objectively a masterpiece.

BREAKING: Iran declares it will no longer negotiate over its nuclear program at all. It will now only negotiate the Strait of Hormuz once the US meets "all of Iran's conditions," with the strait remaining closed until then, per a senior official to Reuters. The official says Iran will show no flexibility on its nuclear program even if the US accepts its proposal to reopen the strait, and will make no concessions on enriching uranium or shipping its highly enriched uranium out of the country, one of the main US demands. Iran had previously said it would negotiate on the nuclear program once all its conditions were met. That has now changed.

I genuinely need people to understand what they are being asked to normalize here. Mamdani campaigned on arresting Netanyahu. Today Netanyahu came to NYC, received massive police protection, and anti-genocide protesters were arrested by the NYPD.
