Some eye-opening engineering realities here. Just one example How much electricity storage would we need? 100,000 GWh How much have we got? 37GWh How much would 100,000GWh of batteries cost? £25 trillion....enough to run the NHS for 120 years. And they wear out. Why the Renewable Energy Transition is Doomed to Fail dailysceptic.org/2026/09/24/… via @LD_Sceptics

All of the battery storage planned for California is 100 GWH.

That'd keep Britain going for about 2h30

Fusion will make it all old hat anyway. Should have just waited.

When I left uni fusion was just 30 years away! That was over 40 years ago. It is still just 30 years away!

Why would we need enough battery storage to run the country for over 100 days? Nonsense.

The article explains why. Suggest you read it. It isn't very long

You really expect us to believe any figures from the Daily Septic? A bunch of populist ranters.

You're trying to shoot the messenger? It won't make the message go away. As it happens the figures are largely from the Royal Society. But don't let actually reading the article get in the way of your prejudices,,,

Nobody can explain that once we use the power from the batteries, maybe in an emergency situation which in which they will last about 15 minutes, how do they get charged up again? If we haven't got enough electricity to supply the grid we haven't got enough for the batteries 🙄

I share your disdain for the idea of grid battery storage, but I think it’s good to point out that that the cost is actually infinity, because it’s impossible at any price.

We will forever need baseload gas. Forever.

Funny thing is even if they had the money it would be impossible. Mass buying materials would drive up the price exponentially, so you would have to buy slowly, so it would take so long to acquire that the first tranche of batteries would need replacing and so on

NESO still trying to reduce the BESS connection queue tells you how much they are really committed to BESS

Don't forget; how the fuck do we store said batteries?
