Self-mastery is freeing.

Don’t worry. Free will is not an illusion. You can tell by the same method as you can use to determine than an onrushing car is not an illusion. Those who act as if it is an illusion wind up dead.

Reality is a simulation

If we can’t identify it, does it matter?

It's a bummer if free will is a software bug in the simulation.

An illusion may still be worth it

We have to believe in free will Lex. We have no choice.

In quantum fluctuations we trust.

Quantum science proves multiple paths. Maybe we are just marbles rolling down predetermined paths but I doubt it. Either way we have free will to an extent but maybe all paths are written.
It almost certainly is.
it isn't. and even if it is. what makes you think illusions are always a mark of determinism? isn't there a choice between illusions? Our ability to see the full truth is as limited as our mortality. :)
What does it matter? It feels just the same either way.
How do you choose what to think next?

Counterargument: perhaps freedom is a set of vitalizing limits, a spectrum, example: the limiting effect of music enhances our power to dance...
Why? what do you think you possibly lose from it. It's actually a very freeing thing if you accept it. It's not losing anything in your life, key word 'illusion'. Are you scared of your shadow?

We choose our own destiny, daily.

determinism makes more sense, and I believe that. But theres a sci-fi book which describes an alien society which already knew everything which would happen, but despite that they still enjoyed experiencing each moment, even though they knew exactly what would happen.

It's interesting to consider that free will and determinism can coexist. We are compelled toward many things: eating, sleeping, & death. They are inevitable. I believe we have free will but within a narrow set of parameters–the choice between good and evil will always be our own.

Read "Free Will" by Sam Harris. Blew my mind.

There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who resign their will to the universe, and those who impose their will on the universe. Don't waste time pretending your individuality is an illusion.

It's not even an illusion; there is no subjective evidence for free will. Surely you've seen @SamHarrisOrg talk with Joe about this. Also, it's not a bummer, it's enlightening.

Don't be a pessimist. The trouble with you is that you go to work every day and you think that because you go to work every day, you should do something. And you do something every day and you don't realize when it's a special day.

We are products of our environment. Yes, we have free will, but we no longer have the will to be free. Our thoughts and behaviors have been shaped by the created environment and social structures around us. #makeadifference #liveyourbestlife #hwpo

Lex, I love you but if free will was an illusion would I have just sold my house and thrown it all into #dogecoin? I don't think so.
1
To see if you have #freewill, just stop exercising it.

The best explanation I ever heard about free will being kinda there and also kinda an illusion is - Imagine being on a cruise leaving New York and arriving in the port of London... On that cruise you can move about freely, but your overall destination to London is set.

It's only an illusion until you 'wake up'.

Good illusion to have though

What IS an illusion ? Thé langage ? The Worldwide economic system ? Your libido ? Your memories ? 😽

Is it free will that is the illusion? Free will allowed me to sue the pants off these platforms...when people are done whinning on Twitter and want to go to war fill out the form. Unless of course free will is an illusion. cohenandmcmullen.com/robinho…

please have a conversation with @SamHarrisOrg about this. I think a lot of fans would love it

Probably is. Depends on the definition. Human knowledge and decision making are both quite limited and brought out by situational stimuli. Stimuli we cannot control. Any greater intelligence would look at human free will as we look at ants free will.
