I have learned that I offended Croatians and I do feel the need to both explain and apologize. On @WhickTv, I was speaking off-the-cuff re: the implausibility of Graham Platner's claim that he had no idea he was getting an SS tattoo. I mentioned that he had gotten the tattoo in Split, Croatia, which I referred to as a "hotbed" for Nazism/Neo-Nazism. I believe I was imprecise in my language and it seemed I was demonizing the entirety of Split and Croatia. That was not my intent. For me, saying a city or region is a 'hotbed' for a specific fringe movement does not mean the general population aligns with it; rather, it means the environment contains a highly concentrated, active hub of that specific subculture. When such a subculture exists, there is also RESISTANCE to that subculture. Which I should have said. I should have said this re: "resistance" because it was a big part of what I meant when I said it is quite implausible to just randomly get an SS tattoo in Croatia, especially in 2007. Everyone knows what a Totenkopf means: both the people who espouse it (like tattoo artists) AND those who oppose it. Croatia is not the U.S. It's a place where the Ustasha/SS actively operated. The "plausible deniability" was always ridiculous for this reason. In 2007 there were still MANY survivors of the Ustasha and SS alive in Split, Croatia. It is also a historical reality that Split and the surrounding region have dealt with highly active, visible far-right and neo-Ustasha fringe groups. This includes specific subcultures--like factions of local football groups and the massive "protests" in the late 2000s--that co-opted Nazi, SS, and fascist iconography. As well as debates over the banning of such iconography. Given that specific climate, the idea that a local tattoo artist accidentally or unknowingly inked an SS Totenkopf onto someone as a 'generic scary skull' without recognizing its history is implausible. It is also implausible that anyone opposed to the Ustasha/SS/Nazism would not recognize the tattoo or the iconography in general. That's all I meant to say. Again: Split also has an incredible history of WWII anti-fascist resistance. An SS Totenkopf would NOT be okay for many within the populace. They would also recognize it immediately. I am sorry if, in my comments re: NeoNazis in the area, I cast any accidental aspersions on the entirety of Croatia. I have heard so many wonderful things about Croatia and have dreamed of one day visiting. Your history is complex and beautiful and I know you have been through a hell of a lot. I am sorry, again.
