CHINA JUST CREATED ANOTHER MILITARY ISLAND China has completed the first construction phase of a massive artificial island on Antelope Reef in the disputed Paracel Islands. Satellite imagery shows a reclaimed feature nearly six kilometers long, a 680 meter wharf, a deep water harbor and more than three kilometers of straight coastline that could support a military runway. Excavation for a possible runway and construction of a helicopter pad have reportedly begun. Beijing says the development could support weather forecasting, scientific research and maritime safety. The geography suggests a larger strategic purpose. Antelope Reef sits in the northern South China Sea, closer to the Chinese mainland than Beijing’s bases farther south. That location could support surveillance aircraft, coast guard vessels, air defenses and potentially H 6 bombers while complicating American and Vietnamese submarine operations. It could also help China develop a protected maritime bastion for its nuclear armed ballistic missile submarines. In a Taiwan conflict, the island would provide another position from which Beijing could monitor allied movements and extend military coverage across the northern South China Sea. Vietnam claims Antelope Reef and has formally opposed the construction. China has controlled the Paracel Islands since driving South Vietnamese forces from them in 1974. Decode Conflict assessment: China is changing maritime geography faster than diplomacy can respond. It occupies a reef, creates permanent land, adds civilian infrastructure and later gains the option to deploy military systems. The United States should expand persistent surveillance, coordinate more closely with Vietnam and the Philippines, and prepare for the island to become an operational military base. This is not merely another territorial dispute. China is constructing the geography it wants to dominate.
