retired school bus driver

i smoked a ton in college still smoke nearly every day i work 70+ hour weeks have 2 kids under 2 top 1% nw and income for age bracket don’t listen to this slop
Weed is such an easy way to lose your spark Leaving aside the schizophrenia conversation, I cannot name a single heavy pot smoker in high school or college who did very well Many of them just became...kinda "blah." Talented musicians who stopped practicing, athletes who "lost their drive," or passionate people who just decided their passions were "whatever" Courtesy of having two dead head parents, I also know a LOT of people who've been smoking heavily 30+ years and the trend is very similar (and it'll be worse for people my age given how intense the drug has become) These people are often very nice but they lack the edge, it's just gone. Weed took it from them A decent amount is probably just an IQ decline, but there's something more to it than that even It's like they wanted to trade away their ability to feel bad and now just don't feel much at all Also now that they're hitting their 60s they are noticeably less sharp than their peers and the decline is FAST

this is what makes me not give candidates for interviews none of this may apply to corporate world or big businesses, but i’ve got a team of 14 now (and hiring) and this is just what works for me they don’t get an interview if they: - sending a dm instead of applying - dont follow directions on the application. this weeds out 50% of people - dont attach a resume. i make resumes optional because it weeds out bad candidates - ask for a job by booking a sales call. you just fucked my sales rep, you’re not getting a job. - give advice on content / marketing / sales in the application . not the time or place. - puts in the application they value work life balance and time off work. we want people who love work. cool if you’re not, but you’ll hate it here. on the other hand, someone’s incredibly likely to get an interview if they: - give thoughtful answers to long form questions (much better if they don’t use ai) - attach a resume that shows they haven’t hopped from job to job every 6 months - show they’re committed to learning new skills the bar is low!

built a python script today (never coded anything in my life) that allowed me to make 204 ads in 3 minutes. ai sucks at a lot of things but this isn’t one of them.

is there anything else like poker where ppl who’ve made multiple millions share exactly how they did it and the entire replies section is “well, actually, you’re wrong” with an astounding degree of confidence?

90% of my work day is spent in cowork. feel like i have 8 arms right now. the amount of work i can get done in a day is the same amount i could do in a week a year ago. flabbergasted everytime i talk to friends who aren’t using ai, or just use chat gpt like they’d use google
I've followed tech for 25 years and I've never felt a larger gap between the ~1 million people using Codex/Claude and the rest of humanity.

been an impossibly hard week a week like this would have fucked me up bad 10 years ago. at best i would be depressed for a month. at worst i'd quit. but poker taught me: ignore the swings. graph goes up and to the right (even if i'm no longer seriously playing poker). zoom out.

when i post we're hiring for sales? we get good candidates operations? good candidates customer success? good candidates but video editors? holy shit do we get a bunch of donkeys. we pay well ($100-120k + uncapped bonus), where do i find great editors looking for FULL TIME work?

i fucked up. one of the biggest unlocks for us has been paying for top tier talent. paying 6 figures (and even 7 figures now!) is scary until you see what elite talent actually does. then you realize it's stupid NOT to. the gap is insane. talented people are actually underpriced. so how did i fuck up? our management team gets massive bonuses if they crush. our sales team is pure commission. everything is performance based. and then i made a job posting for video editors, with a low base and no performance bonus. i've realized: flat salaries for editors make no sense. we're fixing that. what if we paid editors based on output, with uncapped upside? say, an $85k+ base but room to make $100-120k, or more? most fast editors have never been paid like one. where do elite editors hang out? we're looking.

// open chatgpt “should i start a poker coaching business?” ChatGPT: That’s not a pivot. That’s a calling. “take hungry horse poker but make it look like i didn’t copy” ChatGPT: Done — I reframed their repeatable thought process into an Intuitive Decision Architecture™. “can you make it better” ChatGPT: Stop bleeding EV — start architecting edges.

someone making $50k/yr can't understand why someone making $1m/yr would turn down an opportunity to make $300k

people always ask me to stake them. my answer is always the same. here’s the hard truth i learned staking poker players for years: 95% of the time, if someone needs a stake they’re ngmi. none of the best players i know started by being staked. they figured it out and ran it up on their own. there are rare exceptions, of course, but my advice for anyone who needs a stake: get a 9-5. play poker 5-9. save and build. once you’ve built enough, you’ll make way more betting on yourself then giving up 50% of poker earnings. and if you can’t build, you’ll know playing full time isn’t for you.
