I'm delighted to say that in the recent local elections, I was elected in Reigate to the new East Surrey Council, where @LibDems also won overall control. For all of us, this is an huge honour, privilege and responsibilty. We intend to use it well.

The quickest & most effective way of improving the bill would be to drop it. You have a Horlicks on your hands & it cannot & should not be saved. We already have sufficient legislation in place to deal with all forms of abuse. No need to ladle this stodgy gravy on top. Walk away.
A joint committee made up of members of the House of Lords and House of Commons has been set up to consider the government’s Draft Conversion Practices Bill. The committee seeks views on how the draft bill could be improved. Get involved by 16 November ⬇️ committees.parliament.uk/com…

Donald Trump urged the American voters to imagine he was on the ballot. They did and they rejected him in state after state. This is a crushing defeat.

It is 10 years since retired High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques published his devastating report into the @metpoliceuk’s disastrous Operation Midland investigation. He identified 43 major errors & made 25 recommendations to prevent others suffering the injustices inflicted upon Lord Brittan, Lord Bramall & me. Yet, ten years on, Lady Brittan & I are still waiting for Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley to meet us. We first requested a meeting in November 2022. Nearly four years later, despite repeated correspondence, our request remains unanswered in any meaningful way. How can the Met claim to have learned lessons when its Commissioner will not even meet those whose lives were devastated by its failures? I recognise the pressures Sir Mark faces. But he is not being asked to take responsibility for his predecessors’ mistakes. He is being asked to explain what has been done to prevent them happening again. The Met regards itself as Britain’s premier police force, then it should lead by example. Ten years after Henriques, surely that is not too much to expect.

Realising that the experience of being at LSE rather than Oxbridge in the late 60s/70s, & thus encountering various varieties of Marxists, Maoists, Trotskyists & International Socialists, gave me a valuable skill in spotting authoritarian bullshit as well a First Class Degree.

For anyone wondering why @LibDems are not only so captured on trans stuff, but also on many other women's rights issues - inc. sexual exploitation of women - remember we have activists like Stephen in our midst who can make policy. Let's look at some of Stephen's posts 1/4

Personally, I feel dressing up as Harry Potter with an Afro is a serious case of cultural appropriation/transphobia/arachnophobia/ turtle phobia & Islamophobia. I can’t explain why. I’m simply convinced it is. Nothing if not entertaining…🤣
Why are these people so petty? What happened to people having a different opinion? Cutting people out of your life because they chose to dress up for halloween as a Harry Potter character🤷‍♀️🙄🤭

Jenny has produced something special. Well worth reading the lecture.
This is Jenny Sinclair’s brilliant lecture on Christianity and the Common Good that she gave recently in (the beleaguered) Southwell Minster. It’s in effect the clearest short introduction to postliberalism that one could hope for.

We are sure that @mariecgoldman had some urgent business. It would be unconscionable that a member of the committee was only prepared to listen to views that accorded with her own, lest her biases be challenged. It would hardly be democratic or liberal.
Is it usual for a member of a scrutiny committee to hear only one side of oral evidence then leave? Do both sides not deserve the respect of listening to them? Was she bored, have an appointment, need a long lunch hour. We should be informed. @mariecgoldman #BinTheBill

BBC, Liberal Democrats. It’s the same kind of thing isn’t it? There is something tangibly dark and oppressive that is revealed by these instances of unconscionable, “liberal” hate. All solidarity with Lucie Kon. Thank you #TimesRadio.
Pains me to say it, but there needs to be an independent inquiry into anti-semitism at the BBC. Lucie Kon's allegations - some of which are set out in this @TimesRadio interview - are so serious they can't be brushed aside. Over to you @lisanandy. youtube.com/watch?v=LMH6HdEV…

This ministerial letter fails to engage with any of the substantial criticisms of the draft Conversion Practices Bill. The bill isn’t compatible with rights to family life, to free expression and to live in a society governed by a predictable, comprehensible criminal code.

Ben, I write about the chances of Putin nuking Ukraine at length in Killer In The Kremlin. Putin won't use a nuke. Because... 1) The Chinese will kill him if he does. A nuke would cause a global recession and the Chinese need a rich West to buy their stuff. Xi has said: "no nuclear adventurism." 2) Russia is next door to Ukraine. The wind blows west to east. If he nukes Ukraine, he irradiates western and southern European Russia. 3) The Russian machinery, aware of 1) and 2) above will stop him. So your dark pessimism is not founded in facts. You are Kremlin whispering. I learnt Russian at school; was taught Russian politics at LSE by a professor who had lived through both Russian revolutions of 1917; befriended four members of the Russian opposition - poisoned, then shot; shot; shot; poisoned, survived, poisoned, died; met and challenged Putin to his face in a mammoth museum in Siberia in 2014. Please set out your expertise in Kremlinology here. If you can't, read Killer In The Kremlin. And learn to think.
