Discipline is downstream of identity. Some of you struggle with discipline because you have no positive vision of the man you want to be. You’re just existing day to day and since God made you to want pleasure, you grab it where you can: food, doom scrolling, porn, alcohol, etc.
You don’t beat that with willpower you defeat it like Jonathan Edwards said with “the explusive power of a superior affection.”
How do you get that? Identity
Here’s how I implement this:
I am a son of God, a husband, a father, a business owner, mentor and friend. I am a protector, a provider, and a leader. I am fit, I am capable, I am a master of my desires.
That is fundamentally who I am.
How does that man behave?
Having this identity doesn’t remove temptation, but it makes it far easier when temptation comes to say, “that thing doesn’t serve who I am and who I want to be so it’s a no from me, dog.”
