We set a soft goal of Calculus by 8th grade and not sure he’ll make it, there are just so many demands on his time and attention He likes it okay, he’s not as enthusiastic as some others. His sister dropped it in favor of a general purpose AI and is doing fine, but she never has his knack for math What it’s definitely done is reduce my workload. At this point they mostly prefer to work through things on their own and only ask me if they are stumped which is very rare these days The experiment continues…

I've had good results using Math Academy with my son, now I'm starting my daughter on it. They are nothing alike, and she is much weaker at math in general (90th percentile vs 99.9) I'm very curious to see how she responds @tracewoodgrains

So my son took his last math MAP of elementary school and got a respectable 267, a few points higher then his 263 from last year. This is in line with prior improvements Apparently elementary school MAPs are scaled to 300 vs 350 for middle/HS, and it’s hard to get past 270s as a practical matter He mentioned he didn’t think it was hard, there was no advanced material. It actually cut short at 44 questions which seems brief, but they are young The vast majority of what he learned in Math Academy prealgebra simply wasn’t what he was tested on. Which is a bit of an issue, from his perspective it doesn’t result in any external validation His primary motivation was competition with the small clique of Asian/half-Asian gunners who are his friends and gaming buddies. I can see where motivation would be an issue for students in general. From my perspective the implications for tracking/grouping are obvious… We will have to wait until next year to see if his studies have any “real world” impact. @tracewoodgrains
