Toured the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos State, Nigeria, at the invitation of Dangote Group President and CEO @AlikoDangote ahead of our groundbreaking ceremony for the Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, next week. The refinery in Nigeria is a massive investment with a crude oil refining capacity of 700,000 barrels a day and produces more than 100 million litres of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel every day. The company has built 120km of sea cables to move crude from ships to the refinery. This huge achievement is a testament of what African governments, investors and financial institutions can do together. The refinery whose construction we launch in Kenya next week will be bigger. It will transform the petroleum sector in our country and region, providing fuel reliability and security, scaling up industrialisation and creating 60,000 jobs. When the refinery is completed, spin off industries will emerge, including the production of fertilisers, chemicals, and packaging.

A NATIONAL TRIBUTE TO MOSES MATOVU ( RIP) A MAESTRO HAS FALLEN Uganda has lost not merely a musician, but a national cultural treasure. It is with profound grief and a deeply wounded heart that I mourn the passing of Moses Matovu (RIP) the legendary maestro, founding member and enduring pillar of the celebrated Afrigo Band. His death leaves an enormous void in Uganda’s music fraternity and in African culture, and in the hearts of generations who grew up listening, dancing and celebrating life to his extraordinary music. As Patron of the Uganda musicians Association and more personally as his friend, I join his family, colleagues, fellow musicians, the Afrigo Band community and millions of admirers in Uganda, Africa and across the world in mourning a man whose contribution transcended music. Moses Matovu belonged to that rare generation of artists whose work became part of the soundtrack of a nation. Through decades of extraordinary dedication, discipline and creativity, he helped build Afrigo Band into an institution. Governments changed, generations came and went, musical tastes evolved, but Afrigo endured. At the heart of that remarkable journey stood Moses Matovu composer, instrumentalist, performer, mentor and custodian of Uganda’s musical heritage. His music carried our stories. It celebrated love, life and community. It crossed ethnic, linguistic, political and generational boundaries. In moments of celebration, Ugandans danced to his music; in moments of reflection, his melodies spoke to our hearts. That is the measure of a true national artist. The circumstances surrounding his reported death are deeply disturbing. I call upon the Uganda Police Force and all responsible security agencies to conduct a swift, professional and thorough investigation, establish the facts surrounding his death and, if criminal responsibility is established, identify those responsible and bring them before the courts of law. Justice must be pursued firmly, transparently and in accordance with the law. At this hour of national sorrow, I also make a humble appeal to the Government of Uganda, the Ministry responsible for Culture, the music fraternity and all Ugandans: Moses Matovu deserves a dignified national farewell befitting the magnitude of his contribution to our country. We must honour our cultural heroes not only when they entertain us, but also when the final curtain falls. Let Uganda stand together and celebrate the life of a man who gave us decades of music, joy, identity and cultural pride. Let younger musicians study his discipline, longevity and devotion to his craft. And let his passing remind us that artists are custodians of a nation’s memory and deserve recognition as builders of our national heritage. To his family, the entire Afrigo Band family, fellow musicians, friends and admirers, I extend my deepest condolences. May Almighty God comfort you, strengthen you spiritually and carry you through this extraordinarily painful moment. Moses Matovu ( RIP) may have left the stage, but the music will not stop. The instruments may fall silent today, but the melodies he gave Uganda will echo through generations yet unborn. Farewell, Maestro. Farewell, our friend.
