Think about how bizarre this has become.
Five men are arrested near an RAF base and within hours parts of the right wing internet have decided they are migrants, people who came over on small boats, Iranian agents or terrorists.
Then we find out they are all British nationals from London.
Now we are hearing that there is no evidence at this stage to suggest this was a terrorist incident, no viable explosives have been found and the men have been released on bail while the police continue their investigation.
And yet somehow the rush to turn it into a political story never stops.
That is the bit I find genuinely disturbing.
It sometimes feels like people are almost desperate for something terrible to happen in Britain because it gives them another reason to attack the people they already hate or disagree with.
When did we get to a point where some people seem to care more about being able to say “I told you so” than they do about what actually happened?
Britain is not a prop for your political arguments.
And if you find yourself secretly hoping something terrible has happened because it proves your political point, maybe it is worth taking a step back and asking what the hell we have become.
