1930s: the asbestos company's own doctors find the lung disease and the company settles the lawsuits quietly, with silence clauses, for 40 years.
1953: the tobacco companies meet in New York, read their own research, and set up an institute to manufacture doubt about it. It runs for 44 years.
1961: the chemical company finds its non-stick coating in the blood of its workers and the livers of its rats. It tells no one for 40 years. It is now in the blood of every person on earth.
1965: the sugar industry pays three Harvard men to blame fat. The paper runs in the top journal. The payment is found in a box in 2016.
1966: the maker of PCBs finds dead fish downstream of its plant and writes an internal memo recommending the company say nothing. It is 1977 before they are banned.
1990s: the makers of the opioid know the addiction rate from their own files and tell doctors it is under one percent.
2000s: the makers of a diabetes drug see the heart attacks in their own data and keep selling. 2010 before it is pulled.
The pattern is not a secret conspiracy. It is a filing cabinet. The company knew, the knowledge sat in a drawer, and the consensus outside the building was built on the brochure.

We live on a historically cold world, where the average planetary temperature currently sits at a chilly 15°C.
We are rarely reminded that Earth remains far colder in the current age than its long-term average of 22°C–25°C, maintained across the 541 million years of the Phanerozoic Eon. A planetary warming of two or three degrees is unlikely to trigger an existential crisis; historically, it never has under conditions comparable to today.
The blunt reality is that we are still living through the Late Cenozoic Ice Age—the most extensive global cooling event since the Karoo Glaciation, which lasted 105 million years across the Carboniferous and Permian periods. By contrast, our current ice age began 34 million years ago with the initial glaciation of Antarctica.
Humanity and our symbol-driven culture evolved against this cold, drying backdrop. From a political perspective, some may view this movement, which is championed by the Sana’a leadership, as akin to a declaration of a long term strategic direction: completing and embracing the message that God conveyed through the Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago. That message was centered on establishing the principles of justice and equality, spreading goodness and peace, confronting tyrants, oppressors, murderers, and usurers, worshipping God alone without associating any partner with Him, and affirming all the prophets whom He sent to all nations.
Sana’a’s adoption of this approach at this particular juncture represents a profound source of confusion for Riyadh and its leaders. Saudi Arabia which regards itself as the state that controls the Muslims’ Qibla and the Two Holy Mosques is becoming deeply immersed in practices that contradict the divine teachings and guidance revealed through the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad, such as oppression, killing, usury, supporting oppressors, spreading discord, and inequality among people.
What is happening today between Sana’a and Riyadh amounts to the presentation of two fundamentally different projects by the two capitals to all Muslims. Over time, Muslims may find themselves compelled to choose between the Sana’a project, which derives its legitimacy from following the Prophet in whom they believe, and the Riyadh project, whose legitimacy rests entirely on external alliances and the United States of America.
