《The hard part of satellite connectivity is not reaching the phone.
The difficulty is knowing when to activate it, who is responsible, and what data can travel over it.
For public administrations, satellite links make more sense as a continuity layer when fixed networks are damaged or cut off.
That means planning terminals, power supply, latency, exposure to weather conditions, bandwidth allocation, and cybersecurity controls before an incident occurs.
Vodafone Spain’s Vodafone SAT proposal, together with Satellite Connect Europe, points in that direction: Direct-to-Device connectivity from LEO satellites, using conventional smartphones and low-frequency spectrum.
Use-case development and testing are planned from 2026, with a commercial launch planned for 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
The technology matters.
The activation rules, testing cycles, and data governance matter more.

BCE CFO Curtis Millen discussed SpaceX, satellite connectivity and BCE’s investment in AST SpaceMobile.
Asked about SpaceX’s expansion in the U.S. and how it could translate to Canada, Millen said:
• BCE views the U.S. and Canadian markets as very different. In the U.S., SpaceX has wireless spectrum, while the situation is different in Canada.
• Regarding satellite connectivity, Millen said:
“There is a place for satellite as a complement to our networks. That is why we made an investment in AST SpaceMobile.”
He added that BCE sees satellite connectivity as an add-on for use cases such as remote locations and mountain climbing.
• Regarding U.S. broadband, Millen said BCE’s fiber strategy focuses on suburban markets where cable operators have a dominant position, rather than competing directly with AT&T and Verizon in dense urban areas.
• He described SpaceX/Starlink’s “natural home” as somewhat more rural markets, while BCE’s U.S. fiber expansion is positioned between urban fiber deployments and the more rural areas served by fixed wireless and satellite.
• Millen also noted that fiber and fixed wireless are currently gaining subscribers in the U.S., while cable is losing some market share.

As expeced the datapoint fitness issue causing glitches was a first sign of full deployment. Confirmed just now by the bstar drag spike we see as the SpaceForce data model finds a better fit to the now much bigger surface area suddenly causing increased drag.

🚨 $ASTS BLUEBIRD11 IN FULL DEPLOYMENT? 🚨
The dashed lines in upper two panels here shows an major inclination and a major eccentricity glitch in the latest spaceForce TLE while the SupGP data from ASTs own satellites telemetry system does not.
Historically for all other bluebirds there has been either eccentricity or inclination glitches like this (sometimes both) on the last SpaceForce TLE before the full deployment is made obvious in a large BSTAR drag spike.
The glitches are due to mismatch of the data points upon the deployment between where it is and where its supposed to be without deployment.
I expect the cause of this glitch to be revealed by the next TLE. The alternative explanation to the glitch would be thruster tests on increased power.
As obvious from the other panels the spacecraft has been using propulsion since around sept 10.

and supporting industries operating well beyond the
reach of terrestrial infrastructure. By closing New Zealand’s remaining coverage gaps, this technology will help create a more connected, productive and
resilient nation.
Importantly, the AST SpaceMobile solution has been designed to integrate directly with the 2degrees network. By building and owning our
own ground station infrastructure, we have greater
control and flexibility over how the satellite

《Europe has a narrow window to establish leadership in direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity. The opportunity is real and growing, but it will only materialise if the regulatory framework enables scalable, operator-led deployment integrated into Europes mobile networks. The mobile satellite service (MSS) proposal, as drafted, risks unintentionally constraining that outcome. Targeted adjustments would ensure the Regulation delivers on its core objectives of resilience, competitiveness and European technological leadership: First, admissibility rules must reflect how control is defined across EU law. The current ownership-based test would exclude viable European partnerships and weaken the field of applicants. Admissibility should instead be assessed at the level of the applicant entity, allowing structures where European control is clearly exercised whilst enabling access to global capabilities that are essential for delivery. Second, the framework should promptly recognise geographically neighbouring countries. Early adoption of equivalence is critical, in particular, to ensure that UK-based capabilities deeply integrated with the European telecoms and space ecosystem can participate fully in the selection process from the outset. Third, the comparative procedure must be retained and prioritise applicants best placed to deliver scalable pan-European D2D services through viable business models, concrete mobile network operator (MNO) partnerships and integration with existing mobile networks, whilst treating the financial contribution as a qualifying requirement rather than a ranking criterion. The financial contribution should be set at a level determined by the Commission, and not by a sealed bid process. Finally, the Regulation must ensure continuation arrangements remain an exceptional safeguard, subject to appropriate protections, rather than creating an automatic right for incumbents to seek extended spectrum access beyond the transitional period. These adjustments are essential for Europe to develop a viable operator-led D2D market, delivering a competitive market at scale whilst safeguarding essential public and security objectives.》

《Wow - it was an incredible week in Paris at the Space Defense & Security Summit (SDSS), held as part of World Satellite Business Week. The SDSS brought together a strong turnout for our panel session, "Next-Generation Military Satcom: Capabilities, Architectures and Sovereignty." The audience gathered on Wednesday to hear the panelists' perspectives on this topic
In the room were key leaders from the USSF as well as representatives from various Western allied ministries of defense. Many were encountering AST SpaceMobile for the first time, and that has now begun to shift as awareness grows.
We spoke about how AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites are already delivering meaningful support to the defense community, and how this capability will expand as additional satellites are launched. The US Defense community has already seen an early demonstration of what is possible using our existing 12 BlueBird satellites in orbit today, and our allied partners are now gaining a clearer understanding of how our direct-to-device broadband technology is reshaping expectations of legacy satellite communications.

$ASTS More action on the European front. It needs to be the European MNOs driving this (balancing sovereignty with global including US partners) and Vodafone is the obvious leader, with the JV SatelliteConnect Europe with @AST_SpaceMobile.
Sovereignty was at focus on this week's SOTEU speech by von der Leyen at the European Parliament. Space had its chapter in the speech and new legislation is in the pipeline by November. In March 2027 we should know more who will take over the MSS spectrum. Satellite Connect Europe is one contender.
