DEVELOPING: Six Washington state senators are urging Gov. Bob Ferguson to opt into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit—and act quickly so scholarship organizations can prepare for its January 2027 launch.
The letter signed by Leonard Christian, Matt Boehnke, Mark Schoesler, Keith Goehner, Judy Warnick and Jeff Wilson says, “we should be committed to educating all of Washington’s children, including those whose parents choose private education or homeschooling—particularly when this program does not require additional state spending.”
The program offers federal tax credits for qualifying donations to nonprofits providing K–12 scholarships, including educational services for public-school students.
Ferguson’s office told The Ari Hoffman Show its review of the federal rules “will take some time.” His spokeswoman did not answer when I asked whether that review would be finished by year’s end.
The Senators wrote, “This is an opportunity to bring additional resources into education, expand options for families, and do so without raising taxes or increasing the burden on Washington taxpayers.”
The Senators are calling for action now: “The sooner you act, the more time eligible Washington organizations will have to establish programs and make families aware of this opportunity.”
