Did his generation ever have to outbid a private equity firm for a starter home?

yeah i saved, but not enough to keep up with how fast housing and everything else got more expensive. that’s the whole point, $500 a month toward an $86k down payment is still over 14 years

My dad asked me last month why I’m still renting at 41. I told him the cheapest decent house around here is about $430,000. He said, “Then start saving.” I told him 20% down would be $86,000. He said, “You don’t need that much. Just put some aside every month.” So I did the math for him. After rent, daycare, groceries, insurance and everything else, I’m lucky if I can save $500 a month. He grabbed a calculator. $86,000 ÷ $500 = 172 months. Over 14 years. He just stared at the screen. Then he said: “I put $4,000 down on my first house. Took me less than a year to save it.” Then he went quiet. “I honestly thought you were all just spending too much.” That was the moment it clicked. He wasn’t trying to be insensitive. He genuinely didn’t understand how different the numbers are now. Sometimes people aren’t defending the system. They just never stopped to look at the math.

Not shocking, Texas, the land of trucks and him being the sole reason diesel is $6+ a gallon, I'd be mad too

For most of the year I don't change my schedule based on covid risk. I do meetings, big, little, long, short, in the old pre covid way, but in a well fitted respirator. But times like now when covid is ripping through the country again, I work a little harder to pick where I am, what I do, and when I do it. And that can mean postponing some or changing how many people are at them or meeting on zoom. But I can't get out of some, like hospital visits and funerals and school assemblies. So I just mask up. I ventilate and filter the air, and I do whatever is next. And then I wait to see if it worked. One day it won't, but I'm working hard to delay that day as long as possible.

Bleeding question for the American healthcare system 🏥 Imagine you walk into a restaurant. You ask for a menu. The waiter smiles: "There are no prices. Eat first." You finish eating. You ask for the bill. The waiter says: "We cannot tell you. Go home." Three months later, an envelope arrives in your mailbox: - Bread basket: $480.00 - Water glass rental fee: $210.00 - Out-of-network chef who walked past your table for four seconds: $1,650.00 TOTAL DUE: $2,340.00. This sounds like a dystopian comedy sketch. Except it is literally how going to the hospital works in the United States. You can ask five different doctors, "How much will this cost?", and all five will look at you with genuine mystery, like you just asked them the location of Atlantis. Nobody knows! The hospital does not know! The insurance company does not know! The price is decided by a magical dice roll three months after you leave. Why is healthcare the only industry in the free world where you buy a product with zero idea of the price tag? 🎲💸

Why isn’t every single one of us calling our members of Congress & the Senate & demanding that they get off their butts & do something about Trump now because they know what he’s up to with the midterms & after what he said about LA & SanDiego I’ve barely heard a peep from them. Who agrees?

My wife had a liver transplant. She is on immunosuppressants. She always masks when in public for obvious reasons. At least monthly someone approaches and chides her about masking.

I know some of you are harassed about masking (& some of you are harassers, & fuck you, move along)… But I just realized today, Covid taught us to mask. And some learned. I’m never going back. Keep your airborne bioweapons. Keep your plagues. I’ll keep breathing thanks🙏

With the U.S. government clearly taking reports of a plague outbreak in Russia seriously, it'll be interesting to see whether or not Kash Patel goes on his scheduled visit to Moscow in a few days. If he skips the trip, that is an indicator that the situation is likely pretty bad.

Trump’s war in Iran is causing heating bills to skyrocket this winter. To add insult to injury, he wants to zero out funding that helps families pay those skyrocketing bills. I'm fighting to expand LIHEAP, because families shouldn't have to make sacrifices to keep the heat on.

Trump's speech in Texas was emblematic of his decline. He was erratic. Chants were half-hearted. Hecklers were rampant. He tried the LA/SD line again - kind of kills the argument that it was a gaffe. The energy was odd. No wonder Fox didn't carry it live. Talarico will win.
