I tasked Astra with modeling a 1972 VW Beetle based on info it could find online. It used Fusion 360 via MCP to build it out and then Blender to render stills and videos. After a few rounds of editing, 24ish hours of Astra working, and hundreds of reference images, I think it's getting somewhere.

It's made some progress over the last 24 hrs...
I had Astra make a 1972 VW Super Beetle using info it could source online. This is its first version. Not bad at all! Modeled in Fusion 360 and rendered in browser with Threes.js for this quick vid. I'm very curious to see how much actual detail and real world dimensions it can resolve this to...

I just fell into a rabbit hole researching The IBM 1401. It was the first relatively affordable and widely popular mainframe. Many consider it “the Model T of the computer industry.” I love seeing how creative marketing was back then for new technology and computing in general.

Some other crazy material sets and swatches from The GUILD!

We really obsessed over the first version of the material samples for Roman and Williams GUILD. They were very important early sales tools and turned out to be critical for vendor alignment. I wish I had better photographs of the originals. There was more branding and detailing on the rear.

I love a good material swatch. Here are some first concepts of swatches I worked up with Astra and rended in Blender.

Okay, now we're cooking. Astra just made a design that I need to print across 7 plates. Amazing!

Shiprock is one of my absolute favorite places on Earth!! I had no idea it had a tech / computer background. (Pic from last summer during a looooong road trip)
The Fairchild manufacturing plant in Shiprock employed 1200 people, mostly Navajo women, and became one of Fairchilds most successful plants, with unbelievably low defect rates. Fairchild even concluded one of their pamphlets with a traditional Navajo chant, Song of the Earth Spirit.

Starting to add vision into the mix! This round was informative but I think Astra needs better eyes. Hooking up the DSLR...

Here's my prompt! There was an existing Astra-created "research packet" for the screen module. It's a simple PDF plus markdown set that is generated for any component that I bring into the mix.

After we landed the fit, I had Astra make a bent aluminum version I could order online. It adapted the design, then checked manufacturing tolerances, costing, and production realities via the @rmfgdotcom MCP. (Thanks @KennethCassel!) We landed on a two piece design with a bent outer shell plus 3d printed fitted tray. This lets us print a specific tray based on the final manufactured part and module for a snug fit.

I spent a few days pushing Astra to make a 3d printed enclosure for an off the shelf screen module. Going off just an Amazon link and my voice input, it worked thru all the details and created a functional case! We did many round of refinements and revisions. After each I would 3d print the enclosure and do a physical fit test. Often taking pics to use as input for the next rev round. I really appreciated Astra's general knowledge around 3d printing and "DFM" at this scale. Every object it designed printed perfectly and worked.

Astra getting somewhere with this malleable glass orb. This version added new inner mass to project color and shifted the tint over time. Then I started playing with projecting the shape into 2d space. First with a straight, flat version that I kind of love. Second was a version with contouring and color.

This Eames computer explainer video is one of my all time favorite pieces of media and design around technology. IBM commissioned the Eames Office to help teach the public what a computer was and how it could be useful in everyday life.

I didnt give it much instruction. I told it my end goal was an animated assemble video and pointed it at images references. It drew the panels as separate meshes and all hardware were separate items.

Testing a completely different kind of Blender use from Astra. This actually started as a web shader Astra made and then we moved into Blender to get better rendering.

I really loved the handoff docs it produced for each round. These made it easy to review the final work, see references, and provide feedback in a more visual environment.

I gave Astra a tougher object to model this time! I asked it to recreate this bent metal computer enclosure designed by Teenage Engineering. First prompt produced a full 3d model, folding animations, and a basic render. Round 2 worked on details and material rendering, finishing with the 360 video below.

Astra has been crushing 3d models, renders, and animations for me! It's crazy how little input you can give it and it will go to town. Here's the first motion test for a @FrameworkPuter motherboard!

FYI, Astra ended up bypassing the MCP/API bc it required an account just to quote.

Five minutes for @ChatGPT Astra to make me an enclosure for a screen module. Sliced and ready to rock on my printer. All I supplied was a component link. It immediately asked what printer I had and which filament I would use. Then it did everything else! 🤯

I've recently discovered @ChatGPT is amazing at using GPT-Image-2. Its generates things with such confidence and almost always one shots it. This is a sprite set that it just made. It started by generating 9 frame animations per color and then orchestrated them over 24 frames

My first huge Sol Ultra task in Codex was a success! It asked me 22 questions during a detailed Q&A session. Then completed the work after having used 28 sub agents! It worked for nearly 4 hours and I didn't even use a goal. 😅

Lots more to do but a pretty functional v0! It’s really fun seeing video trails on a global map:

The second goal was to capture and display camera pose! The app records the iPhones direction, pitch, angle, etc to best represent how the user was holding the camera at time of capture. Here’s what this looks like in the app:

I build an app for capturing enriched photo / video this weekend! The first goal was to capture gps encoded video that lets you view the travel path on a map. Here’s how video captures look in the app:

I’ve been working on a new mapping app for iOS called Field Atlas. I decided to tackle complex trip planning first. Most of the functionally is now done and I’m excited to start making this look better! Anyone planning a road trip and want to test it out?

Big day for SpaceX! They’ve been a really fascinating company to watch grow and evolve. I got to attend an early launch in April 2015. Few people knew of them and they had yet to land a booster. Now they’re a household name and their capabilities are tremendous!

Super early days, but a lot of the core foundation is there. Thanks Codex! 🙂
