I am very happy to share that my first book, Turkish-Israeli Relations: Democratization, Asymmetry, and Regional Crises (1960–1971), has just been published by Routledge. @routledgebooks The book, based on my PhD dissertation, explores a decade in the history of relations between the two countries that has been largely overlooked to date, despite being a particularly intense one, both in Turkish politics (the period begins and ends with a military coup) and in regional affairs (with the 1964 Cyprus crisis and the Six-Day War, among other developments). It draws on what I immodestly believe is a unique combination of Israeli diplomatic archives and Turkish documents from the period. It examines a relationship that, especially at the beginning of the decade, was very different from what we see today. This was a time when Turkey and Israel cooperated in Cyprus to contain Greek influence; when the Turkish elite openly regarded Israel as a model, and even as the embodiment of a more successful Kemalist revolution than their own, and celebrated its military victories against its Arab neighbours; and when the Turkish left could view Israel as a source of inspiration, while nationalist and conservative circles saw it as an ally against Arab socialism. Yet what happened in the 1960s is not disconnected from the situation we see today. On the contrary, as the book shows, some of the trends that continue to shape Turkish-Israeli relations first emerged during this decade. Between 1960 and 1971, relations with Israel became a matter of public debate in Turkey and began to be used by politicians for domestic purposes; the broad consensus in Ankara gradually shifted from being pro-Israeli to being pro-Arab and then pro-Palestinian; and Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa became powerful symbols of mobilization for the rising Islamist movement. It was also during this period that the Turkish left increasingly aligned itself with the Palestinian movement, and the first Turkish volunteers joined Palestinian organisations for military training. I tried, in this book — to my knowledge, the first systematic analysis of the period — to make sense of this crucial decade, and I hope it will be of interest to fellow researchers working on the history of the Middle-East, Turkish-Israeli relations, Turkish and Israeli foreign policy and even Turkish domestic politics.
