when people talk about the great surviving record stores in New Jersey, Princeton Record Exchange deservedly looms large, but Jack's Music Shoppe in Red Bank merits inclusion too, one of the last truly-still-a-dollar vinyl dollar bins, still full of treasures

What kind of chippy city slogan is this?

MAD MEN did an MLK assassination ep that had an authentic Twitter Fight™️ smh truly the best to ever do it
MAD MEN is the #1 show of the century, probably all-time. Unparalleled depth, performances, themes, emotions; the best drama that is also somehow the best comedy. I know this; you know this; your mom knows this. We don't have to be babies who pretend otherwise.

I got half a bowl of pho spilled on me by a Gen Z server in the Midwest (don't worry, it was lukewarm) and she barely muttered sorry.
I just had the Gen Z experience at Starbucks. I walked up to order and the girl just stared at me. I waited and she basically mouthed “can I help you” and so I go “I’m sorry, what?” Then she kind of rolls her eyes at me and says in just above a whisper “I said can I help you!” Is this generation mute? What is happening? I feel like they are fucking with us.

There's something about Don's whiteness in Mad Men. Did he need to take someone else's identity to get ahead? The whole postwar infrastructure was designed to lift white male vets into the middle class. I feel like this is relevant vis-a-vis his lack of growth around race.
One thing I did appreciate with the show is how Don, despite his disgust with open bigotry, still engages in casual racism, whereas Roger actually grows as a person and Pete is thoroughly anti racist from the beginning. It’s a good reflection on the emptiness of Don’s morality

Maybe ok for the Roger at the end of the series.

I get it now! The illiterate people who are arguing with me don't understand what I mean by short story. I mean something beautifully crafted (think Carver, Oates) not just a narrative unit. There are no filler eps of Mad Men.
What I love and respect about the writing on Mad Men is that each episode contributes to a larger story while being a short story in itself. Nearly flawless (as long as we can forget the use of the Decemberists in that one ep & Don's journal voiceovers).

Lots of dunking in the comments saying, durr, guess you just learned what a TV show is. Makes me wonder how old you all are. TV shows from their inception until recently wrote each episode as standalones and certainly not with season or multi season arcs!

My proof: growing up in the 1980s in a house where the TV was never off and a degree in American Studies, lol.

Agreed. Here's my really hot take: The Sopranos would never have been seen as prestige TV without Gandolfini playing Tony. Those episodes are completely uneven in quality.
Replying to @rizzo_pubhist
I agree and frame it this way: Dr Melfi scenes during Sopranos early seasons were insightful but lost their relevance as time went on, we already had a fully-formed character; sessions added nothing for the viewer. Don’s VOs happened too late in the run, his character was all set

I think this is less to do with classic episodic television than it is with the American short story tradition Matthew Weiner’s pulling from — Salinger, Fitzgerald, Cheever (Drapers live in Bullet Park, Ossining) — it much more borrows their structure, aesthetics and tone
