Exclusive: Employees should be required to speak to their managers to tell them they are going off sick to end the “insidious” culture that means hundreds of thousands of people fall out of work every year, a government adviser has said. Sir Charlie Mayfield, the former boss of John Lewis, said he wanted to end the “culture of fear” that prevented managers from talking to staff if they were off sick amid concerns that they would face a formal complaint or could even be taken to an employment tribunal In an interview with The Times he said that he wanted to “change the norms” so that employers and employees felt able to talk about sickness and develop “return to work plans” together. Staff could be referred to workplace health schemes such as physiotherapy or mental health support or given alternative roles. He said that the GP “fit note” system was not working, with GPs coming under “really awful pressure” from patients. “Some of the issues with the fit note is that we’ve wired it into the system such that it’s a requirement to have it in order to access either sick pay or benefits,” he said. “Which means that it’s a gateway that people have to go through if they want to get that thing. “I’ve heard GPs saying to me that they get very difficult conversations, they’re put under intense pressure - I mean really awful pressure - by patients sometimes to give fit notes. “So what we’re then saying is OK that may be the case, maybe the government should change how that is done and address some of those perverse incentives.” thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…
