February is Black History Month. Did you know that some of the first police in Greater Victoria were black officers?
These pioneers in VI law enforcement predated the formation of SPD by 48 years. They were part of 800 Black settlers, who lived and worked in Greater Victoria and Salt Spring Island, often worshipping at the Shady Creek Church. Now known as the Central Saanich United Church, a plaque commemorates this congregation. These officers, along with the nascent Black community of the time, often faced terrible prejudice and we recognize their sacrifices, successes and legacy.
We are proud to display several African items for the duration of the month, thanks to #Issambacentre and a private donor. #BlackHistoryMonth
Edit: This post was re-posted to more accurately reflect the first black police officers.
Andrew Mcfetrick's art exhibition invites you to explore emotions, thoughts, and sensations beyond representational forms. Come check it out at the Second Floor Gallery at Municipal Hall. saanich.ca/EN/main/news-even…

In Saanich, thefts from unlocked motor vehicles are more common than from locked ones, so make sure you’re giving that key fob the “Beep-beep” when you exit. With the colder weather, we know it’s tempting to leave your vehicle idling while you go back inside your home, but we strongly discourage this practice. Keep your vehicle secure and take your valuables with you. #carcrime#spd#saanichpolice
Did you know...we have an FAQ page for snow related questions?

🚙 Fact of the day: private contractors are responsible for maintaining provincial highways year-round. This includes snow clearing our off-ramps and highways in Saanich (Hwy 1 and 17).
❄️ Despite the snow and icy conditions, Saanich crews are working hard to collect garbage and organics carts according to the schedule.
If road conditions prevent cart collection, please place carts in a location that doesn't impede pedestrians or snow clearing efforts.
