Ukraine’s biggest steelmaker halts production As I already reported, Russia damaged Ukraine’s largest steel producer with repeated missile strikes. Production stopped. Their steel almost certainly ended up in Ukrainian trenches, bunkers and rebuilt grids. ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog, has now decided to halt production indefinitely, and close the mine. This is a big thing. Halting a furnace for a few days is possible and requires up to a week to restart. Halting for a few weeks or months requires several months of re-heating (often quoted around half a year if the bottom is dug out and rebuilt). Cooling too fast also cracks the refractory; then you may have to reline before you can even start. The factory has taken a write-off of $1bn to reflect its far lower value after the cool-down.
