The House of Photography space is so perfect to run a mini version of the event, the Alone sessions that we run use visuals that are made from listeners memories that are all photos that were submitted as part of SCENES and made into custom artworks.. they work as prompts where without you expecting it one will just suddenly connect with you and take you back somewhere you didn’t expect. It’s really interesting the way it takes: physical life → digital photo → projections → onto physical space → then triggers new memories back in the room for people on the night. 8th October with FUJIFILM lates at House of Photography with @fujifilmuk We are going to have deep listing and live performances (Alone), conversation prompts using music as a way to close the space between us (Together), and we will be creating some live artefacts using instax cameras and printers to make a memory wall of our favourite music memories. Drinks, chat and nice vibes to escape the doomscroll Alone Together is a space for meaning making and moments that feel authentic, we use music and memories as a way to connect with each other, to reflect and connect with our selves. Filmed last year this little mini doc and interview was made when I was approached by some students from the film courses at University or Wesminster. I am always up for helping any young people make real things to put out in the world, so when they asked if there was something I needed doing I came up with an idea that I could actually use. A big thanks to the creative team behind this and the friends and listeners who contributed voice notes.. one of which because the sample that got the EP started. It’s funny how just doing and making can lead to new ideas, and saying yes to this and going out on socials to ask fans to contribute messages was what kickstarted the music for the Alone Together EP. I’m currently travelling in a camper van with my wife and kids. It’s the one time of year I try and switch off.. but it’s also a time where I end up thinking a lot as my mind has the mental space to actually do that. It’s also the one time when I read fiction books, and take a break from making music. I’m currently reading the Midnight library by Matt Haig and the last trip I read Rivers In The Sky by Elif Shafak… both have made an impression on me and got me feeling inspired in different ways. As I’m reading I always find a way to make elements of the story about me or relevant to me, which is a reason I also love music. Music historically started as a way to build community, to express, to tell stories and to pass on knowledge and lessons. More commonly now that is less often the case in terms of the literal purpose of lyrics, but still we write our own lives into the music. They tell our story, we place ourselves in it, it speaks for us and to us. The difference between purpose of music in the past and now is going to become the theme for my next project that I’m already working on the concept of in the back ground at the moment (more on this soon). today though I’m thinking about the purpose of music as a practice. Musiking. The actual process and act of making, playing, composing, improvising… and all the technical layers that come with that now we use DAW’s. Why do we make music, and where does this making for how it makes us feel get tangled up with making to make a life we want. And all the grey in the middle of these things. If you’ve read my posts in the past you will know I think about this a lot, mainly because I have worked with so many musicians and artist both professionally and as a educator, and our relationship with music and the idea of happiness we paint for ourselves. So, when I read this from the midnight library I wanted to share it here for everyone to read. I wish it was an age thing, that the people around me have a troubled relationship with creativity and music, but I speak to between 60-200 young people a year who want to work in and around music in some capacity and even more on socials through being a music artist.. and I can assure it’s not. So reading something like this hit me, and felt like the type of words I wish I could say more often. People want to hear Russ quotes about how “the worst advice they ever got was to be realistic”, not my mantra which is that I want to build a life where I have a healthy relationship with music for my whole life. At least that’s what I used to think, but more so each year we all seem to be looking at our relationship with music differently, or at least being forced too. I think if you zoom out this is one of the positives to come out of the impact major tech and the major music companies have had on music as an industry over the last 10-20 years. We are being forced to look again, to look inside ourselves and ask why, what matters, what makes this me, and why would anyone care. Long term this is a good thing.

When the vision comes together:

Last week I ran an a creative sprint experiment that explores what happens when you put an artist in a room with a group of people who know absolutely nothing about them, and give them the time and freedom to build something for the artists world, with the artist working with them. It started as a pitch, what Sound of Fractures looks like as a creative agency, with artists and young creators embedded from inception, through development, and into final execution. Instead of taking them on at the end, or being a typical agency that looks to youth culture for its ideas but pulls from them instead of paying back. open.substack.com/pub/soundo…

Thanks to everyone who supported my work, collected my music and art and just showed up or shared along the way ❤️

It has now led to me building a whole world around participation, co-ownership and meaning making. Alone Together has become the perfect vehicle for all the ideas I have experimented with over the last 4 years, and can’t wait to see where we take it next… but crucially it came from having creative and technological freedom. And it continues that energy… it isn’t an EP, or an Exhibtion, a commute event, or an immersive arts Exhibtion.. it’s a container for meaning making.

So, it felt like the right time to come back for an update where SCENES was crowd funded onchain, and 350 people submitted personal memories, and the truth is that community around the project went on to form the foundations of my career.. along with winning one of the @optmismiFND 2nd place prizes .. and all the people that collected my music as NFTs to essentially fund the R&D, something that people over look, All the visual works and collaborations that were collected on @zora @Optimism @catalogworks @opensea all feature in the Exhibtion / live concept.. and all the music too.

I feel a pull to come back to X, cause it’s where I found a group of people who were looking for an “other” for music, art and creativity, and they didn’t just look, they wanted to participate and help make things happen.. There was a moment that brought together a really unique group of people And it’s led me to my new project Alone Together:

Alone Together EP is out now, the live experience started 27th June… wait and see what next 👀 Sound of Fractures as a project has long left behind being just music.. an ecosystem, a world, a creative lab, a creative technologist … a world that creates worlds, an R&D lab inside a artist… ? I’m not sure I need a label yet, but because it doesn’t have one I have needed to find new ways to fund progress and projects, I’m lucky that I’ve not been forced into a box yet, and have been able to keep experimenting in the grey, and a big part of that has been down to support from listeners, fans and @cxy

1 week since Alone Together - designing physical space for meaning making, using music as a seed. this really was so hard to get people to understand, because everyone loves a narrative of connection, but in reality the issue is still no music company, label or sponsor can get their head around anything other than short term likes, streams and views. Some time in the future, they will start to get the real value of deeper connections and meaningful experiences rather than just peddling them as takes… I hope that we can build something that people look back as being ahead of the curve like SCENES was. now we can show people what Alone Together is and does, and what the value is for participants, commissioners and sponsors I’m feeling excited about what comes next. artists of all types lack the opportunity to show , prove and experiment, and social media has made that worse, because the places you need to get money from are still stuck in the platform mind set. Some people have called it pioneering as a project, and I do think that’s true but we also need pioneers to back experimental projects, and for me that has been @cxy who has come on as the first executive producer of Alone Together Project, providing grants to allow it to exist in its ideal form. We are building a squad of people with shared values so if you want to jump on a call with me and CY to learn why and what being a executive producer of Alone Together is, then get in touch. We are always looking for individuals and sponsors to take these ideas to their next level. Independent music needs new ideas, and ways to fund experiments is so important, I hope that others will start to see the value in backing artists on the coal face of what new music careers look like. People, brands, patrons, sponsors who want to be known for creating new ideas and new models instead of just copying a reel they saw and paying a marketing company to “do one of those for us” so we can put it on our socials. The experience marketing and immersive market is booming right now, and music is always present, but the value is not being captured music musicians, or is a tag on or dressing at the end… yet it defines the mood of the space. In Alone Together music is the seed, the glue and the focus.. it’s an ongoing conversation between the music, the audience and memory. Talking through music and talking about music at @eli1ah and Charlie Darks event last week. Love seeing the thread from yellow squares to now, it’s inspiring to see. It reminded me a lot of what I’ve been trying to explore over the last few years: the emotional value of music, and how you actually create the conditions for people to feel and connect through it. What I loved was the format. Something that ran through the day so I could bring my kids, but also a rave at the end for those who wanted that. Same space, different ways of engaging. It felt generous. Thoughtful. Human. It also felt close to what I was trying to do with SCENES, and what I’m building towards with Alone Together — using music as a starting point for connection, not the end point. Unfortunately my kids were… as restless as always. But the highlight was my 4-year-old asking for a button on his DJ player that makes the seat shake after hearing Charlie talk about sound systems. Which, to be honest, might be the purest takeaway of all.

Today I tested two ideas: • Visuals that respond to the audience moving in the space • An endless ambient layer so the room feels alive before I even play Both are rough. Both might not work. But that’s kind of the point. I think learning new tools — whether that’s AI, plugins, or anything unfamiliar — is one of the best ways to get unstuck as an artist. For me, that looks like: Starting ideas in Claude Turning them into something I can test Then building them properly in Cursor No pressure for it to be perfect. Just testing ideas.

How artists can build their own platforms 👇 A lot of artists are worried about AI right now. And rightly so. But I keep coming back to this… what if these tools aren’t about replacing us, but helping us build exactly what we need? I’ve never had to raise money for an event before. And I’m working on something that doesn’t really fit in a box. So I built my own system. A way to research festivals, brands, venues, people… map them into a world… and slowly build a network around the project. It’s messy. It’s new. But it’s helping me make sense of something that felt pretty overwhelming. That’s been the biggest shift for me. Not the output… just having somewhere to organise the thinking. To map things out. To come back to. I don’t think tools like this replace the work. They just make it easier to start. #vibecoding #independentartist #creatortool

Great use of language

Initially I tested some of these ideas as part of my project SCENES that used the bond between music and memories to help people connect with each other, and reflect on the things that matter most… Alone Together takes those ideas into a physical space, and will go on to be a hybrid Exhibtion and live experience

I made a mini doc to give some insight into the Alone Together pilot, the first event we held to test out how we can design space to encourage more meaningful connections between people who attend. It all stems from a belief that music holds a huge amount of emotion value, and we created a world that brings that to the front of people’s minds,l.

To create the career I want - I have to create a use case. I have to show the world what I’m imagining in my head. I have to create it in reality so people can see it, hear it, take part, and want to support it. I want to start speaking in to existence what comes next for Sound of Fractures. And it’s not trying to be a new Fred Again or Barry Can’t Swim (not that we don’t all dream of being that successful). I’m actually more inspired by the SAULT live show. Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst. Imogen Heap. Elijah. The 180 Studios Reverb Exhibition at the Vinyl Factory. These are things that inspire me to push toward where I want to go next. Alone Together is my new EP and Project, it is going to be an extension of the ethos of SCENES that includes a way for listeners to contribute to the music online, and will also build out beyond that to be my IRL reimagining of an electronic music event. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while, and recently the pieces fell into place. This year it’s going to become a reality. #independentartist #creator #immersivemusic #digitalart
