At @StimsonCenter, the Is War Worth It? project (which I co-helm with @RealChrisPreble) released a new report this week on the costs of the Iran War... and it ain't pretty.
When the war began more than 200 days ago, the initial U.S. objectives were focused on ending Iran’s nuclear program, destroying its missile industry, annihilating its navy, and ending Iran’s support for terrorist proxies in the Middle East.
As we wrote in May, the US failed to decisively achieve these objectives.
Three months later, they've been completely cast aside.
U.S. military operations are now almost exclusively focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic – a goal that is only necessary because of the initial decision to go to war and Iran's response to it.
We said in May that the war was a strategic calamity. That verdict is unchanged ...

The War Is Weakening America's Ability To Deal With Other Global Challenges
- The Pentagon estimates that the war has cost the Department of Defense $40 billion.
- The United States has severely depleted its stockpile of munitions.
- By August, the U.S. military had used 80% of its THAAD inventory (anti-ballistic missile interceptors) and around half of its Patriot interceptors.
- The U.S. Army has used “virtually all” of its Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), long-range weapons expected to be relied on in any conflict with China.
- The diminished stockpiles are already having significant consequences in the Indo-Pacific and Europe, as key American allies report delays in arms shipments and fears that Washington cannot maintain its alliance and treaty defense responsibilities if conflict occurs.

You can read the whole report here, but the bottom line is that the US has not achieved any of its key strategic objectives, is focused exclusively on opening the Persian Gulf to maritime traffic, and the indirect costs of the war continue to rise, undermining the US economy and creating economic challenges for ordinary Americans.

Whenever Democratic political operatives gather to drink these days, they talk about three things: their chances in the midterms, who will be the nominee in 2028, and if they have read — or are in — “the book.”
The book in question is ‘Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative,’ by Evan Barker, a onetime fundraiser who has written something between a tell-all and a cri de coeur about her time inside the Democratic Party. But for many Democrats the book has been candy less because of its call for reshaping politics and more because, while peeling back the curtain on the inner workings of political campaigns, it names (some) names.
“You want to tell the truth, and you want to tell people what happened, but at the same time my intention was never to just burn people needlessly to be vindictive,” Barker tells David Freedlander. “At the same time, it’s like, yeah, I knew that some of the stories in there might hurt some people’s feelings, but sometimes people need to get their feelings hurt.”

I am sure everyone who had big feelings about the has-been Macklemore will be up in arms to speak up for yet another Jew who has been deplatformed for being a Jew.
Argentinian Jewish writer Ariana Harwicz was invited to take part in a cultural festival in Granada, Spain.
She was confirmed. She was on the program.
Then, just three days before the festival began, she was removed following pressure from pro-Palestinian activists and students.
Harwicz has publicly opposed cultural boycotts, including those targeting Israeli artists. She says what happened to her reflects a much broader trend: Jews, Israelis and others who refuse to fall in line politically are increasingly being pushed out of cultural and academic spaces.
She was invited. She was announced. Then came the pressure and she was gone.
