Read this on fb and wanted to share. Absolutely incredible story of Kid Rock.
In late 1993, twenty-two-year-old Robert James Ritchie opened his front door in Michigan to find his high school girlfriend, Kelley South Russell, had left their six-month-old son, Bobby Jr., and her two other children sitting on his porch steps before walking away.
Born on June 14, 1993, Robert James Ritchie Jr. arrived right as his father’s early music career collapsed. Jive Records had just dropped Kid Rock following the commercial failure of his debut album, leaving the young musician broke and scrambling to survive in the Detroit underground scene. After making sure Kelley’s other two children were safely placed with their maternal relatives, the twenty-two-year-old took his infant son inside and raised him alone.
With no money for a nanny, the unruly underground rapper had to grow up overnight. Inside a cramped apartment, he mixed formula, changed diapers, and rocked the baby to sleep, then used the quiet hours while Bobby Jr. napped to write songs and pack cassette tapes and CDs to sell out of the trunk of his car. Exhausted from sleepless nights, he played dingy Detroit-area bars and clubs for a few dozen dollars in cash just to keep diapers and milk in the house.
Even after his 1998 album Devil Without a Cause turned him into a multimillionaire and a Michigan court granted him full legal custody in 2000, Ritchie refused to hand his son off to a staff of strangers. Behind the wild, hard-partying persona in the press, he built his touring schedule around Bobby Jr.’s school calendar in suburban Clarkston, Michigan, driving him to class, attending parent-teacher conferences, and coaching youth baseball so the boy would never feel abandoned a second time.
Watching his son grow up and graduate from college, Kid Rock often told interviewers that finding a six-month-old baby on his porch steps in 1993 saved his life, giving him a reason to stay disciplined when the Detroit nightlife could have destroyed him.
Robert Ritchie’s years raising Bobby Jr. in Michigan while rebuilding his career from the Detroit club circuit to the 1998 release of Devil Without a Cause get a closer look below.
