The Senate just tanked the procedural vote on the CLARITY Act. The rationale from key Democrats? Pushing for stricter ethics language around official crypto holdings. The peak political irony? By blocking the bill, they left zero statutory ethics provisions in place. So what’s the play here? Is this a genuine leverage move to squeeze out last-minute concessions, or a strategic stall to run out the clock before midterms? Either way, time is running out fast. Even if this is leverage, Thursday is the absolute earliest we see another vote, and with only 12 legislative days left, pulling off renegotiations, amendments, and full votes is a massive lift. I’m on the ground in D.C. for the next three days meeting directly with key House/Senate members, the SEC, OCC, and the White House. Stay tuned for updates on whether Congress tries for a last-ditch deal or officially cedes the floor to regulatory agencies.

The overwhelming majority of crypto owners want clear rules of the road and protections like those provided in the GENIUS Act and Clarity Act. This is a shared priority for Republicans and Democrats. The only reason for this progress to end now would be if Democrats choose politics over good policy.

The Senate needs to pass the CLARITY Act. Claims that it creates ethics loopholes, enables illicit finance, or puts consumers at greater risk get the issue backwards. Without clear rules of the road, those risks are harder to police and consumers are less protected. At 2:15 PM today, the Senate should vote YES on cloture and move CLARITY forward.

As AI makes attacks cheaper and faster, formal verification can help developers move from finding bugs to proving critical security properties. I get that prosecutors want their jobs to be easier. But we have this little thing called the Constitution that is awesome even though many times it makes prosecuting alleged criminals harder. From a policy side, making law enforcement prove the software developer they are trying to send to jail actually intended to commit a crime shouldn’t be controversial.

Institutional adoption needs continuous trust, not just one-time audits. Great discussion in Japan on where Web3 security is heading.
