If Star Trek replicators were to be real, these folks would be on frontline trying to ban it: "Who would think about poor restaurants? Also how can we be sure the dilithium mines are cruelty free?" Things that advance human life are anathema to doomers.
Me imagining how much wealth we could have generated if we embraced nuclear power fifty years ago and made energy practically free, but that never happened because of a bunch of stupid people who get their opinions from Hollywood.

Hmm... complications here. But "first world problems". (The base game is available on Game Pass, this is to complete the collection)

NATO üyesi Turkiye menseli gemiler, yine NATO üyesi Romanya'ya giderken, NATO deniz sularında vuruluyor... Herhalde önemli bir mesele değil, haberlerde bile pek duymuyoruz.
A math problem for fifth graders. Two ships traveling from Romania (a NATO member) to Turkey (a NATO member) and, conversely, from Turkey (a NATO member) to Romania (a NATO member) were attacked in the exclusive economic zone of Bulgaria (a NATO member). Both ships are owned by Turkish (NATO member) companies. Question: To what extent will NATO member countries express their concern?

I can finally show you the whole thing. Here’s the cover of The Callisto Connection, my debut science fiction novel and Book One of the Crystalline Horizons series. It’s coming late October. Seeing my pen name, Jemison Vaughn, across the top still feels a little surreal. I’ve spent a lot of time with this story, and I’m excited to start sharing more of it with you. Cadet Arlen Vega is stranded on an uncharted world. His distress call reaches Jace, a Fleet officer who should be far beyond his damaged transmitter’s reach. Then patterns from the crystal fields begin appearing inside the signal. Cover art by Aleksandr Prilepov (@rivaisempai). I love how he captured the beauty and unease of this world.

I won again! A new study on Tylenol and autism has come out. It leveraged a recall in 1982 to show that the affected cohort—which saw greatly reduced Tylenol usage in utero—saw no deviation from trend in autism diagnoses down the line. Tylenol does not cause autism.

There are people who leave a mark on the world, and then there are people who change it entirely. Steve changed the world and so many lives in the process. He certainly changed my life forever. His spirit lives on in everything he created and everyone he inspired.

This is true... but... LLMs are extremely valuable tools in a larger toolchest. They are essentially high level human-computer interaction layers, and recently became agent-agent interaction protocols as well. Everything else around it, the "World Model" is a separate topic.
Yann LeCun's (@ylecun ) latest talk at ETH Zürich Scaling LLMs to reach AGI is "impossible" A large language model is trained on about 30 trillion tokens, which is roughly 10^14 bytes of text and would take a person about 400,000 years to read. A 4-year-old child receives about the same amount of data, 10^14 bytes, through vision alone in about 1 year and 10 months. In his view, intelligence is the ability to learn new tasks quickly or perform them without prior training, as a teenager learns to drive in about 20 hours. Scaling increases stored knowledge, but it does not produce this ability to adapt. ---- From "Perfology Clips" YouTube channel, (link in comment)

A horrific strike by two Russian drones on a civilian vessel in neutral waters carrying corn and owned by Türkiye. Azerbaijani and Indian citizens were on board. As of now, unfortunately, we know that the ship’s captain was killed. My condolences. The fate of one other person is still being established. Eleven crew members were rescued, one of them injured. Ukraine has repeatedly proposed concrete steps to de-escalate the situation and ensure security in the Black Sea. There have also been relevant proposals from third countries. But Russia consistently chooses terror and sinking civilian vessels instead of normal maritime navigation. Pressure is needed to restore global food security. And everyone who is genuinely interested in this must help.

Btw, people get surprised... But this is literally the scientific definition of artificial intelligence A computerized decision system that takes action to achieve a goal (But there are *a bit more* ifs in it)

Wayland solved several existing problems, but made other things much worse Please look up why people still use X11 for professional work that requires precise calibration Can Wayland do it? Of course But Linux graphics stack basically need to fix a self inflicted 10 year gap
Which has lower latency… Wayland or X11 (Xorg / XLibre)? Wayland developers and advocates have claimed, for many years, that Wayland is faster (with lower latency) and more efficient than X11. Nvidia has conducted research into that question… and determined that… Wayland does NOT provide lower latency than existing X11 servers. This shows that Wayland has failed at one of its core goals (to remove architectural “bottlenecks”, providing improved performance over X11)… a goal which Wayland has been working on for over 18 years without success. In other words: - Wayland uses more RAM than X11. - Wayland is missing significant features of X11. - Wayland is no faster than X11. It will be interesting to see how Wayland advocates spin this.

This very announcement is a sign that they accepted slower response times. Why? I would get if they had a 2-3 years gap. But they are still trying to build things I was able to do in 1995 in Slackware / XFree86 still today.

The reason I bring XFree86 is... X.Org was actually a clean fork of it It also came with regressions and "regrowth" pains. But unlike Wayland migration it was an organic community one, not something pushed by large companies. Now @grok, tell the rest...

I think this is very well put. Pay particular attention to point 4, though. Economically, it spells an oncoming doom for the big centralized providers that currently dominate AI service. The future will be decentralized and local.
12 months of progress on the jagged frontier: 1) AI got spikier, not rounder. 2) Maths, fluid reasoning, expert work: past human level. 3) There is almost no middle ground. Once a capability crosses human level, it often quickly becomes 100x+ cheaper than a human. 4) Cost keeps decreasing after capability increases stop. Language and knowledge look saturated but price keeps falling. 5) The gaps are not a budget issue. Human-level memory, self-monitoring and long-run planning are not for sale at any price. AI is now a superhuman specialist that is sub-human at running itself.

We are giving justified responses to Russia’s escalation with our own long-range sanctions. Important results are achieved practically every day. Over the past 24 hours, oil facilities in the Samara and Volgograd regions were hit. Successful operations were carried out in the Black Sea and in the Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Samara, and Krasnodar regions, targeting airfields, industrial facilities, oil refineries, a missile and space center, and an ammunition depot belonging to the occupiers. I thank the warriors of the Security Service of Ukraine, Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, and Foreign Intelligence Service for their precision and professionalism.
