I love SimCity. One of my favorite games of all time.
The fact that the original game engine (and artwork) was released as open source (under the name "Micropolis") is incredibly cool.
But the UI for "Micropolis" is horrifically bad.
So I forked it.
Re-wrote the entire UI from the ground up. And added a few (optional) features I always wanted to see in SimCity. (And made it a little smaller in the process.)

Also fun: Now includes a new "About This Computer" window, which takes inspiration from classic MacOS and a few others.

Completely agree with @DHH. Testing (and actively dogfooding) on older hardware is a critical part of quality software development.
For 99% (or more) of functionality, there is simply no good reason a PC from 20, heck... 30, years ago shouldn't perform reasonably well.
Every software developer should own a potato PC. It's the easiest way to ensure your application is fast enough. Put your agents to work within it and watch the weight drop. There's no reason a machine from ten years ago shouldn't fly like superman.

There is some seriously fun stuff happening in open source desktop land lately!
I am working on a new desktop named Mocka. The name came from a typo I made while checking whether any projects were already named Mocha. Mocka will replace MATE one component at a time until every part has been replaced. Every component is written from scratch, reverse engineered from how the existing tools behave, and stays compatible with MATE so you can mix both while the transition happens.
The first component is Mocka Dock, now in alpha. It's a taskbar-style dock applet for the MATE panel with pinned and running apps, drag-and-drop pinning, per-app right-click menus with desktop actions and recent files, and minimize animations to the app's button. Window thumbnails are the next milestone.
Mocka Dock will be available in the next GhostBSD package update and will come preinstalled, but it won't be set as the default yet. Once the update lands, add it to your panel with Add to Panel. If you want to try it sooner, the release notes have build instructions.

I think the creator of CentOS and Rocky Linux is right about this.
Locally hosted LLM’s make a great deal of sense to me… but…
The idea of running Chinese models (not open source) on my hardware raises multiple red flags (pun intended).
stupid (noun): running closed-source binaries you downloaded for free, can’t audit, with no guarantees or company standing behind it, on your core infrastructure and data.
Example: Chinese open-weight models are not open source. Running one on your infrastructure is stupid.

I wish GNOME and KDE would respond to critical journalists… but they do not.
In fact, KDE has repeatedly attacked The Lunduke Journal, calling me a “Sneaky Little Nazi” and their representatives have repeatedly harassed, threatened, and bullied anyone who spoke to me.
GNOME even has a formal policy of permanently banning any GNOME member who mentions me in a positive light (or posts a link to the stories I publish).
GNOME’s “ban for liking Lunduke” policy is the only such official policy which exists in the entire computing world (including Big Tech and Open Source).
I will continue to ask both GNOME and KDE for comments on important stories… but I don’t expect them to respond.
.@LundukeJournal: Could you *please* ask the boards of KDE e.V. and the GNOME Foundation whether they view this as a form of "enabling fascism" and whether they intend to forbid the respective Debian maintainer teams for GNOME and Qt/KDE from packaging these desktop environments?

The second Beta release (0.6) of The Lunduke Computer Operating System (LCOS) is now available for download.
The big news: LCOS now has its own, custom Linux kernel. Based on the latest Linux Kernel, without the Rust. You could say it's... stainless.
For this release, the new "Lunduke" kernel is optional (with the previously used, upstream 6.x kernel remaining default on the ISO) while it undergoes some additional testing.
There's also a new text editor in the repository (Lunduke Edit), which more closely follows the LCOS vision.
Basically a lot of great opportunities to put my name on more things. 😎

GNOME spokesperson, Jordan Petridis, has proposed the complete ban of using AI, in any way, related to GNOME.
"LLMs ('AI') can not be used to create or modify
anything submitted to GNOME, or hosted on GNOME infrastructure."
Adding that, "You might be banned for trying to circumvent this policy."
As of this moment, this is merely a policy proposal.
However:
- The person making this proposal is one of the most vocal and prominent in the GNOME world (including drafting a large number of release announcements of GNOME itself).
- This approach appears to be supported by a large percentage of GNOME members (and Board members).
As such, it seems reasonably likely that a version of this will become official GNOME policy.
(Fun Side Note: This policy would make the punishment for using AI the same as the punishment for linking to a Lunduke Journal story... banned from GNOME.)

Governor Newsom of California has announced a 4 person team of “AI Experts” who will advise on how to accelerate “oversight of AI companies” and create a “kill switch” for AI.
The 4 person team is filled with Leftist partisans, with extreme conflicts of interest (some would be creating policy to oversee the very companies who pay them).
Jason Goldman - Democrat. Obama staffer. On the board of CSAIP (a “progressive” aligned policy shop).
Gillian Hadfield - Canadian (not American). Spent 5 years at OpenAI designing their policies. Currently has a paid role at Google, which she would be advising California on how to oversee.
Alondra Nelson - Democrat. Biden staffer. Worked for John Podesta. Adviser to Obama Foundation.

One of the most influential KDE developers, Nate Graham, has made some (extreme) statements regarding @OmarchyLinux, @FrameworkPuter, & @DHH.
The KDE leader also suggested that financial contributors to Omarchy Linux (such as the CEOs of Dell, Spotify, Stripe, Cloudflare, and Dropbox) were a “rogue gallery of villains”.
He says that KDE only took money from Framework Computer “after verifying that Framework had severed their ties with DHH and Omarchy”. Which, he says, happened after “Omarchy received a ludicrous amount of money from a veritable rogues gallery of villains.”
“Omarchy is radioactive in KDE,” the KDE developer stated. “Nobody I know wants to have anything to do with them.”
He also made statements relating this to a “pro AI nazi bar”.
Nate Graham is one of the most visible leaders of the KDE community, a past elected board member, and is currently the CEO of Techpaladin Software — which funds KDE development and was hired by @Valvesoftware to work on the SteamOS desktop (which is KDE).
