Halifax demolished a Black community that had stood for more than a century — and moved the residents out in the city's GARBAGE TRUCKS. Africville, Nova Scotia. It was settled in the 1800s by Black Loyalists and refugees from slavery. Families owned their land and paid city taxes for generations. What they never received was service. No running water. No sewers. No paved roads. No police protection worth the name. What the city DID put there: an open dump, a prison, a slaughterhouse, and an infectious diseases hospital — all sited next to a Black neighbourhood, one after another, over decades. Then in the 1960s the city declared it a slum and cleared it for industrial development and a bridge approach. Compensation was minimal. Some families received a few hundred dollars. And the removals were carried out, in a detail nobody in Halifax has ever been able to explain away, using municipal garbage trucks. The church was bulldozed in the middle of the night so there would be no gathering. Halifax apologised in 2010 and funded a replica of the church as a museum. 🇳🇪 Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine delivered a fiery address at the UN General Assembly, accusing France and Ukraine of backing armed proxies threatening Niger’s military positions and oil installations. “On our northeastern borders, there are proxies led by France, supported by Ukraine and two other countries.” “These proxies are armed, managed and led, and they are about to attack our military positions and our oil installations.” Zeine described the conflict in the Sahel as “a war of liberation against a conspiracy aimed at recolonization,” and accused France of destabilizing the region with Ukraine’s “active complicity.” He also pointed to the region’s natural resources: “Niger’s uranium, Mali and Burkina Faso’s gold, lithium, gas, oil and so many other riches still make the former colonial powers salivate.” And on Niger’s uranium: “For more than half a century, Niger’s uranium has lit the cities of Europe, while our cities have remained in darkness. That injustice is now over.” Niger’s government has made these accusations publicly, but the claims of French and Ukrainian support for the alleged proxies have not been independently verified.
