This visit broke my heart. I visited an elderly man with a free food parcel he had requested. When I arrived, he asked, “Can you talk to me for five minutes, or do you have to go?” I told him I could stay. He spoke about his life, grieving his late wife and losing his only child to addiction. I stayed for an hour and listened. As I left, he said, “Thank you for listening. It’s been a long time since anyone listened to me, Tasha.” I’m sure he meant me. Either way, he went back into his home smiling. With his permission, I’ve passed his details to a befriending service. I learnt a long time ago that a food bank is about more than food. It’s about connection, being heard and being seen. I hope I made his day. I know he made mine. #foodbank

We do this too, for people in Gaza. Our Connecting Gaza project provides some desperately needed material support and also emotional support and human connection through WhatsApp groups. If you're interested in possibly joining us: connectinggaza.org

That’s a lovely if rather sad story - well done Tanisha, and keep on doing what you do. 👍

When I was on the tools I used to go to a lot of elderly people's homes to repair stairlifts etc, I had one old lady who used to switch off the key & blame her grandkids (I dont think she had any) & would then offer me tea. I told her that rather than calling it in (she was getting charged for each call) I would pop in every Thursday & check if the little bugger had switched it off & id bring the cakes. Being lonely is a horrible thing, we as a species need others & anyone can spare an hr a week for a chat & a cake. We need to get some humanity back for our own people before helping others.

Shame on institutions that do not care for our elders. All they want is someone to talk to and tell their stories. What a beautiful blessing to have you go take that time out to care for him this way. Sending love ❤️

Ty for sharing and listening to this gentleman - you gave him hope in a very hopeless world - We may be old and we have stories to tell - few have time to listen Wish you well - keep befriending - you warmed my heart from many miles away -

It is so wrong that a pensioner should have to request a food parcel in 2026. Our government is giving millions away to other countries whilst this gentleman is left to seek charity. It breaks my heart.

Thank you for spending time with that man. How awful it must be to have nobody. I hope he gets a friend soon ❤️

If he can get on wattsapp I’ll keep in touch with him. I’m overseas just now but he sounds so lovely and I bet he’s got a few stories to tell. We need more people interacting with our older generation and no doubt learn a thing or two from them. ❤️

Years ago I was on a bus. An elderly man sat next to me. I asked him if he was heading anywhere nice? He told me he just gets on buses each day hoping someone will talk to him; he’s so lonely & lives alone. When out, remember a smile/hello/chat can mean more than we think 👨🏻‍🦳

My mom would get her dinners from Meals on Wheels in Washington State. The delivery man would always give her a short visit before he left even though we saw her Avery day. It makes a difference.

Tanisha - bless you for giving this man your time. I know exactly how he feels due to my own circumstances, and yearn for the same opportunity. Chronic illness and aging are tough going physically and emotionally. Most don’t make the effort to give us what we need above all else - community and compassion.

Imagine meeting a lonely grieving old man and deciding his vulnerability would make excellent content. You didn’t just listen to him,you made sure everyone knew how wonderfully you listened. That’s not compassion; that’s performance. Ugly on the inside, aswell on the outside.

I’m often approached by people even older than myself, just wanting to chat, to connect. A 92-year-old doing her own shopping told me that her husband, one of her children and all her friends were dead. I know we’re all busy, but we can surely spare 10 minutes?

Thank you! 💕 You are very kind. We need more love, charity & kindness in this world gone mad. We need to proliferate acts of kindness; & spread the stories of them. Love, compassion & giving of ourselves are works that dilute & heal the actions of the evildoers of the planet.
