🇬🇧 No Threats Will Work 🇬🇧 The latest reported stunt involving veteran republicans being bused to the Garvaghy Road to issue threats against other parades will not succeed. Our community will not be intimidated. A thirty-year terrorist campaign failed to break the determination of Unionism and Loyalism. A group of pensioners on a bus run will not achieve what that campaign could not. There is also a basic legal misunderstanding at work. The European Convention on Human Rights framework that now governs these issues places a strong presumption in favour of traditional routes. Interference with the right to peaceful assembly requires a high threshold of justification. Those who seek to reopen settled or restricted routes in the hope of securing further bans risk the opposite outcome. When the proper legal tests are applied, the result is more likely to be the restoration of routes that some believed had been permanently closed. The Garvaghy Road determination itself illustrated the point. Portadown District followed the process, accepted severe restrictions, and obtained a limited authorisation that survived the courts. The subsequent street occupation did not change the underlying legal position. It simply demonstrated a willingness to substitute numbers on a road for the outcome of the statutory process. Threats, whether issued by veterans or anyone else, change nothing. The rule of law does not yield to intimidation. Traditional expressions of culture and identity that meet the legal tests will continue to be defended through the proper channels. Our community has heard these threats before. She sentenced ex-soldier Daffron Williams — a 41-year-old veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and suffers from PTSD — to two years in prison (half to be served in custody) for Facebook posts made in the tense days after the Southport child murders. His posts referenced “civil war is here” and included anti-Islamic imagery. She acknowledged his military service, good character references, and mental health struggles… but still sent him to prison for words on the internet. The same judge has also jailed others for social media posts in the post-riot crackdown, including 24-year-old David Morgan who received 20 months for tweets involving Nazi imagery and racist content. Yet when Rees Newman — convicted of the historic rape of a girl under 14 — appeared before her for breaching his sex offender requirements, she suspended his two-month jail term, explicitly citing prison overcrowding. A veteran with PTSD goes to prison for Facebook comments warning about cultural conflict. A child rapist walks free because the jails are too full.
