NEW: BBC staff told Matt Brittin today that junior staff were being laid off over “very bloated” senior ranks. It was raised so often on a staff call that meeting chair @annaefoster said it was a theme. Brittin/his deputy said managers will be affected. theguardian.com/media/2026/o…

Any sign he understands the BBC’s public service remit rather than relentlessly pursuing clicks driven by what the BBC acknowledges is skewed anger-loving algorithms? Or that the reach stats the Beeb loves to trumpet have been rendered meaningless by auto play and the algo?

Good news for all fountain lovers. Our fountain has now been cleaned and restarted, only for a trial period, and for a few hours each day,but we hope to extend that once essential electrical works have been completed. Exciting times ahead so watch this space!

Failures of privatisation. Royal Mail to cut up to 2,500 jobs RM doesn't meet letter delivery targets. Regulator keeps lowering them Postage: 1st class, £1.80, 2nd class 91p. When privatized in 2013: 1st class 60p; 2nd 50p. Poor service, triple price. theguardian.com/business/202…

Cutting deliveries , cutting jobs , failing to meet service standards on numerous occasions, a "regulator" that takes no effective action. Customers suffer, staff suffer .... what a great advert for privatisation !!

I have a very simple solution to this…. **HIRE ACTUAL GPs!!** Who are qualified to see EVERYTHING- from babies to adults, head to toe, minor to serious Who do not require supervision & are medico-legally responsible for their own work Enough with putting patients at risk!!
This is silly, expensive AND dangerous ‘practices employing PAs ‘must run an effective triage system’ that ensures PAs are only allocated pts ‘presenting with minor ailments’. PAs ‘should not hold sole responsibility for making a final diagnosis’ pulsetoday.co.uk/news/clinic…

Local radio has to be local - otherwise it's pointless. It has been one of the quiet glories of the BBC, until the relentless salami-slicing of recent years. Now, making it regional, will kill it.
"Local radio will be made more regional" No wonder morale is low in a service already ravaged by earlier rounds of cuts 😔 Thinking of all those affected by these senseless cutbacks theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

This is a thread I was sent via the NUJ but I want to share. Please retweet: At the end of last year, the BBC asked Ofcom to change its Operating Licence for Local Radio, so that it could "do more local programming when more people are listening". What happened next? A thread../1

Where did the promised radio programmes go? How the BBC told @Ofcom it would increase the number of local weekend programmes but is now planning to REDUCE them further and have a national show! A great article by Adam Christie from @NUJofficial @NUJ_Leeds nujleeds.org.uk/where-did-th…

Barristers up and down the country branded Andy Burnham's jury trials U-turn a "car crash" within seconds of its announcement last night. The move would push thousands more cases onto the nation's magistrates' courts by stripping defendants of their right to choose a Crown Court trial, the Criminal Bar Association (CBA) warned. gbnews.com/politics/jury-tri…

Two points from this. At the Labour conference, it was said there would be no more money for legal aid, so we cannot expect the limits to change. As wage inflation increases, this fiscal drag will increase ineligibility. But given this, it is somewhat surprising that none of the impact assessments takes into account the pressure self-represented cases will place on the Magistrates' Court backlog.

I pointed out at the time the Consultation was flawed and not in keeping with Ofcom’s guidelines. The BBC was not ‘wanting to do more local programming’ it was doing less. And it did not consolidate any extras into the Licence - so needn’t do them. And it hasn’t. I’ve written to Ofcom about this - and Ofcom’s failure to decide whether to investigate my complaint about the BBC’s failure to reach its required local hours in 24/25. It should have decided whether to investigate in 15 days - it has taken 7 months to date.

They were the jewel in the crown of the bbc ,these shows gave it a presence in the regions …it made it”our bbc” large loyal audiences,a real part of local culture binning them was counter productive ,cruel and left a lot of listeners lonely

This is worrying. The BBC's cuture & media editor Katie Razzall said it was "significant" that the DG had chosen someone with experience of using artificial intelligence to run his news teams, "raising questions around how AI could open up the next frontier of a modern newsroom"

As the BBC makes yet more cuts, I am reminded of the callous way 'Local' staff and listeners were treated in 2023. In the NW ,three great presenters who had a special rapport with audiences had their last shows in October, Gilly, Beswick and Linda Mac. Listeners were devastated.

As those who were impacted by a previous round of callous cuts to BBC "Local " could confirm ... not only is there a high likelihood of the wrong targets being chosen, but loyal people will be treated in a cruel and thoughtless way.
BBC staff are already wondering if another wave of cuts is coming next year, having been told about "waves" of savings. Thoughts again with staff affected this week - and announcements likely to leak into next week, too.
