🫣 Andrew Neil dismantles Labour’s Jonathan Reynolds in one of the most embarrassing moments of the year for the Business Secretary. You’d think they’d know better, especially sat next to Andrew Neil — the best political journalist in the country, and better than just about anyone with stats, figures and detail. Reynolds is on @bbcquestiontime boasting about the changes his government has made to get people off benefits and into work. Neil stops him in his tracks: “Hold on. Your own official forecasts, the Office for Budget Responsibility, under the policies you’ve just talked about, show a relentless rise in the numbers claiming sickness benefit.” Reynolds is already beginning to panic. He doubles down: “But the incentives have been changed. The amount of money you get has been changed.” Neil: “Well it doesn’t matter if the numbers are still rising.” That’s when Reynolds’ brain leaves the building. He says something that makes absolutely no sense given what Neil has just revealed: “People talk about what they would like to do and what they would do with a system they left behind and then didn’t change. That’s the kind of substantial change that actually makes a difference.” Can these politicians actually hear themselves? Does he know what he’s saying in response to what he’s just been told? It’s incredible. Neil is totally baffled by what he’s listening to: “What substantial change have you made if the sickness numbers are still rising?” Reynolds is now just digging in because he’s got nowhere to go: “If you remove the incentive for people to go straight onto that system, rather than being on universal credit…” Neil cuts in with another reality check: “But the OBR forecast takes that policy into account and it still shows the numbers rising year after year after year, as does the bill. So what are you doing to make things better?” Reynolds refuses to acknowledge what Neil is saying and just repeats the same things again. Painful. They really are absolutely clueless. They think they can just deliver the talking points and no one will notice. That doesn’t work when you’re sat next to @afneil. Imagine when they told him the seating plan and he realised who was sitting next to him. 😬😂

We’ve completely lost the plot in this country. Dr Anju Solanki is arguing that if you’re ill, you should be allowed to text or email your boss instead of actually picking up the phone and speaking to someone, because calling is “intimidating”. Yes, you read that right. Apparently it’s just too scary to ring up and say you’re unwell. Get a grip man! Is there any wonder the country is in the state it’s in with people like this! Nick, astonished by what he’s hearing, asks “Why is it intimidating to physically speak with someone?” Anju says because there’s been a rise in mental health and anxiety that asking them to phone in will “overwhelm” them even more. Nick nearly falls off his chair with exasperation: “Oh my god! That is healthier that you have a bit of grit in you, isn’t it? Come on! How are you going to get grit into people if the minute they’ve got toothache, they’re suddenly having emotional health counselling!” 😂 That sums up just how ridiculous this argument is. 🤦‍♂️

😠 NICK FERRARI LOSES IT WITH THE GOVERNMENT OVER THE SMALL BOATS AND SNAPS AT THE MINISTER! “A review won’t stop the boats will it!?” Two dinghies have now reached Kent undetected. Ferrari put it that the government has lost control of its borders. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an “urgent review”. He asked Education Secretary Lucy Powell, rather perplexed, “what does an urgent review comprise?” Powell started “Well, she’s been really clear about that…” Nick didn’t want to hear it. He cut her off and snapped “It won’t stop the boats will it? A review won’t stop the boats, with respect Secretary of State.” Powell “Well it is about how these things are being dealt with or not dealt with.” What?? What does that even mean? 🤷‍♂️😂 Nick said a review is just words. Bang on. Just words as usual. Nothing but meaningless waffle.

😳 ANGRY CLASH AS POWELL ACCUSES REID OF TAKING HER OUT OF CONTEXT! 😡 Education Secretary Lucy Powell had a right go at Susanna Reid on @GMB after being asked about her “out of context” comments on the border. Powell had said we can’t stop everything. Reid pressed her on it. How can you claim the border is secure when you admit you’re helpless to stop every crossing, and two boats have just found a new route and arrived undetected? Powell did not like that at all. Visibly annoyed, she accused Reid of taking her words out of context. Reid asked how, when the context was the boats. Exactly. How on earth is that out of context? It’s simple and self-explanatory. She clearly regrets saying it. Fine. Just say so. Don’t blame the interviewer for quoting you accurately. Reid: “Do you stand by your statement you can’t stop everything all of the time, and what signal do you think that gives to the smugglers and the gangs?” Powell: “You’re just taking that completely out of context!” Reid asked: “What context did you mean?” Powell didn’t answer, because she can’t. She just fell back on the usual lines: “We are clamping down on small boat crossings” and “We have to keep ahead of the gangs who are constantly changing their business models.” Then she sniped: “You can take part of a sentence out of context if you want.” Reid fired straight back: “It was within the context of stopping the boats, wasn’t it?” Powell: “Which we are stopping.” Reid: “Two boats have just found a new route.” Of course Powell never explained the context. She said what she said, and she meant it. We all know this is difficult, especially when boats start appearing from different stretches of the French coast. Just be honest. Don’t try to gaslight people.

Ash Sarkar is a disgrace. Here she is on @bbcquestiontime, keeping it classy by dismissing people protesting immigration as “small penis behaviour”. Great argument, Ash. I’m sure your mates were proud. Then she mocked the protesters themselves, comparing them to fathers lashing out because they can’t see their kids: “This is a bunch of guys who wanna feel like big men because the missus says they can’t see their kids anymore.” Using fathers who’ve lost access to their children as a cheap gag is disgusting. That’s a very serious issue, not a punchline. Then comes the usual condescending line about there being a “variety of opinions on immigration and they’re all legitimate”. No, Ash. You treat your side as legitimate and brand anyone who disagrees as racist or far right. You’ve been doing it for years. It’s the same trick politicians use when they say “there’s a right way to debate these issues”. People have tried to debate immigration calmly for decades and been met with abuse, smears and worse. That’s you trying to police speech and shut people up. It doesn’t work anymore.

A father of two children has been jailed after throwing a plastic bottle at the police and swearing at officers during the illegal migrant protest in Portsmouth. Sentenced to a two year prison sentence. The judge said it would act 'as a deterrent' Now, let me be abundantly clear. I do not believe that any violence against the police is acceptable. I also do not believe that a two year prison sentence is appropriate, particularly when we are allowing paedophiles and rapists to roam our streets because of a supposed lack of prison capacity. The BBC reports the man 'said he had found the bottle on the ground and was going to throw it into a nearby bush, but was angry and so threw it up into the air.' Reportedly, he told the officers to 'f*** off' and 'pointed aggressively' at them (ITV). I can understand the anger, to be honest. This was happening as illegal migrants were being ferried into his town. This sentence is unfair, unjust and morally wrong. Let's be honest about what has happened here. The establishment is making an example of this man to deter others from protesting. A two year sentence is absolutely outrageous - there are far better ways for him to make right the wrong. The third world invaders are greeted to luxury accommodation as heroes, yet this man will rot in prison. It's not right.

Liz Truss to join Restore Britain? Is the former Prime Minister about to throw in with Rupert Lowe? Nick Ferrari pressed her this morning on whether she was considering a return to politics, and specifically whether she might stand as a Reform MP at the next election. She didn’t bite. “At present, politicians are not in charge of what is happening in our country,” she said. “I would only be willing to go back to politics if I knew I could actually change things.” She added that neither Reform nor the Conservatives have “gone deep enough in changing the way we’re governed”. Ferrari came back with: “So it’s Restore?” She didn’t shut it down the way she did Reform. When he asked about Restore again, she laughed it off with “I’m not committing to anything”. Still not a no. That’s the interesting bit. She wants radical change. Restore is the only outfit currently talking in those terms. Reform have drifted and, more often than not, look like they’re chasing Restore rather than setting the pace. Very interesting. 🤔

This is glorious. Susanna Reid ambushed the Defence Minister live on @GMB with his own deleted anti-Trump tweets. Luke Pollard was taken completely by surprise. Asked whether Trump had made the world a safer place, he reached for the safe line that Trump’s pressure on NATO spending had made NATO safer. Then she sprung the trap: “So overall he’s a good thing, is he?” Pollard walked straight into it: “You’re not going to find me saying the opposite, I’m afraid, in an interview about this.” She knew she had him: “Oh really? Okay. I’m just looking back at your past tweets about Donald Trump, in which you don’t seem to think he’s a very good thing.” Then she read them out while he sat there in silence, smiling very uncomfortably. 2017: “Racist, women-abusing purveyors of hate should not be welcome in Britain.” Also 2017: “He’s a hate-promoting, women-abusing embarrassment.” And: “His politics is boasting about sexual assault, his attack on LGBT people and minority groups. Not the type of politics we should be putting the bunting out for.” Then the knockout. “You’ve deleted those tweets. Have you changed your mind?” She couldn’t have planned it better. He walked straight into it. You’d think he’d have seen it coming, but he clearly thought deleting them meant no one would ever know. Brilliant, @susannareid100 👏

Another day, another Labour minister on the airwaves selling a shiny new project, then quietly admitting there’s no money for it. This time it’s Education Secretary Lucy Powell talking up new vocational GCSEs, giving the full spiel about how transformative they’ll be for teenagers. Then Stig Abell asks the obvious question: how much new money are you actually providing? New classrooms, specialist kit, extra teachers — are schools getting anything above their existing budgets to recruit and build around this? You’d think they’d have factored that in before going on national radio to boast about it. Apparently not. Nothing. Not a penny of extra funding. School budgets are already stretched to breaking point and they know it. So why keep piling on new requirements with no extra cash attached? It’s ridiculous.
