Oh, not “having a heart attack on the toilet” then?
Matt Brittin told employees today that he wants the BBC to “be more Elvis,” by which he meant: “A little less conversation, a little more action.” Welcome to the Silicon Valley-isation of the BBC. deadline.com/2026/10/bbc-sil…

Since this has now gone viral, if there’s anyone here from Boursin, I’d be happy to discuss sponsorship deals.

Still my favourite book, I think. If you’ve not read it, you’re missing a treat!
“Is it about a bicycle?” The Third Policeman, by Flann O’Brien, born #OTD in 1911 (died 1966, on April 1 of course). Born Brian O’Nolan, a career in the civil service enlightened him to the absurdities of life, Myles na Gopaleen and Cruiskeen Lawn would agree. (Flamingo 1993).

Interesting - and for 49er fans not great - that he is winless against BUF, BAL, and KC.
Kyle Shanahan passes Bill Walsh today, coaching his 167th career game. Here’s his record vs. every NFL team.

A new mark in San Francisco: Kyle Shanahan will pass Bill Walsh and coach in his 167th game today for the 49ers, the most in franchise history. Fittingly he will do it against the Denver Broncos, the team his father Mike coached. Kyle Shanahan has compiled a 94-72 record in San Francisco, and now he will have coached more games there than any coach in 49ers’ history.

Reading for the 'Beyond the Essay' project we've just started work on, I'm reminded of the value of Louise Rosenblatt's work on what reading literature is all about. The quote below is the end of a chapter, written in 1956 & still so relevant today! s3.amazonaws.com/arena-attac…

People seem to be impressed by the high levels of “AI literacy” Affleck demonstrates here, and seem to be suggesting that this is a more moral/responsible use.
Ben Affleck (Hollywood star & Artists Equity CEO) talks about how he fine-tunes open video models by unfreezing weights and trained only the last cinematic layer so a film crew can hit real production standards. for context, Ben Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022, a 16-person AI shop for film post and Netflix bought it in March 2026 for $587 mn in cash. He needed that model because public video models were trained on his peers' films, and he did not think that was a real business. So InterPositive raised money, shot its own dataset for 8 months on a controlled stage, and used it only as late-stage training. Each new film then trains a private model on its own dailies, so the production keeps the footage and the learning. That is the product Netflix paid $587 million for. ---- From "Bloomberg Live" YouTube channel, (link in comment)

But he’s still relying on 8000+ steps of AI which was scraped and stolen without acknowledgement or payment from extant films; ultimately his final-steps human film crew is still being underpaid; and this practice will further undermine future agency and opportunity.

Okay, I’m watching #CelebrityTraitors. I don’t get any of the Ross Kemp paranoia. I’ve hardly watched any Traitors before, but even I know people aren’t “killed” or “recruited” by secret signals and gestures. What’s he on about? Why’s everyone entertaining it?
