Jeremy Corbyn MP weighed in on a sparsely-attended Parliamentary debate to mark 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street, at which in 1936 Jews and their allies stood up to the British Union of Fascists and stopped their hate march. Mr Corbyn – the man under whose leadership the Labour Party was found by the Equality and Human Rights Commission to have illegally discriminated against Jews – had thoughts to share. He praised the fact that at Cable Street, ordinary people (he doesn’t mention that they were Jews) stood up to the fascists. He recounted how “all of officialdom said to the people of the East End: ‘shut up, do nothing about it and let them march.” But Mr Corbyn seems not to realise that today, the same officialdom – including politicians like him – tells the descendants of those Jews at Cable Street to shut up and let the Palestine hate marches march. The story is the same, and so are the Jewish victims. The difference is that Mr Corbyn speaks at the hate marches, rather than opposing them. For shame.

Remembering the Battle of Cable Street – but forgetting the Jews who fought in it. Unite the Union, one of the UK’s largest trade unions, appears to have excluded the Jewish community from a page on its website advertising its 90th anniversary event to commemorate the Battle of Cable Street. This omission erases the central role that Jews played in one of Britain’s defining victories against fascism. The primary aim of Sir Oswald Mosley’s planned march of his British Union of Fascists (BUF) through London’s East End was to intimidate the local Jewish community. Ignoring warnings to avoid the march, Jews helped to mobilise opposition to the BUF. However, the Union's description of the event instead says that Mosley's fascists were defeated by “a strong, organised working class”, with no mention of the Jewish community. The event is scheduled to take place on Shabbat — a day before the actual anniversary of the Battle on Sunday 4th October, making it harder for Jewish people to participate. @UnitetheUnion has reportedly said that it will speak to the event organisers about the date and amend the information on its website. We urge the Union to rectify this oversight, and to honour the historic contribution of British Jewry to defeating fascism. On Sunday 4th October, there will be a commemoration in the East End of the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street — when, in 1936, thousands of Jews and their allies stood together to stop the British Union of Fascists from marching through the area. 90 years on, the message remains as important as ever: antisemitism must be confronted, not tolerated. As antisemitism once again runs rampant in Britain, we are reminded of the resilience required to stamp out anti-Jewish racism.

Two men have been jailed for a total of 18 years after posting incriminating videos of themselves on social media. Today (Monday 27 July) at Leicester Crown Court, 20-year-old Richile Vangu was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment plus a three-year extended sentence. Oluwatobiloba Akinrinola, 19, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. The pair were each found guilty of a raft of offences on 19 June this year following a trial at the same court. Their crimes came to the attention of police in the early hours of 21 November 2025, when a report was received that a group had attended an open party in North Kilworth which had been advertised on Snapchat. Shortly after arriving, Vangu began threatening attendees with a knife and demanding they handed over designer clothing. He also forced them to transfer money into his bank account and made some of them dance for him, which was filmed on a mobile phone by another man. Some victims were then told to go to an address in Bath Lane in Leicester later that day after telling him they could not transfer money. When they arrived there, Vangu fired a BB gun at them and repeatedly whipped one of the victims with a belt. Some of the group were also punched repeatedly. This too was filmed by one of the group and uploaded to social media. Vangu, known on TikTok as ‘Trixta’, was arrested at an address in London on 27 November. During the ongoing investigation, officers found among those who had been with him were Akinrinola and two others who were then arrested between 3 and 15 December. Following the trial Vangu, of Bowes Road in Southgate, London, was found guilty of: Four counts of robbery relating to the events in North Kilworth Six counts of blackmail at the same location Four counts of blackmail at the events in Bath Lane One count of causing actual bodily harm (ABH) relating to a victim in Bath Lane He also pleaded guilty to a further count of causing actual bodily harm relating to another victim at a previous hearing.
