As Trump hosts Xi today, human rights are unlikely to be on the agenda.
The press will speculate on what deals they will make, when the focus should be what kind of world they will make, and whether other govts & people will stand up to them *both* in defense of basic rights.
US President Donald Trump is welcoming Chinese leader Xi Jinping to Washington, DC.
Both leaders’ attacks on human rights have a global impact.
Human rights are non-negotiable. World leaders should reject Xi and Trump’s attack on human rights.

...and a whole generation of Americans learn that human rights and democracy are "sensitive" and to self-censor if they want to continue their China access and career. Yes, that sounds about right.
I just don’t see it.
Americans are generally far too risk adverse and cowardly. This aspect of our culture should be stamped out not incited. Vast majority of students will not come close to risking detention. More likely to get a gruesome disease in the developing world than locked away in China.
Academic freedom doesn’t matter. Students can swallow restrictions on academic freedom for a semester and see what that feels like. They will learn something from the experience. They must understand that going to China means temporarily sacrificing certain freedoms—freedoms of association, speech, and religion. They should understand this before they go. But it is not a reason not to go.

On the evening of September 24, China Action, a New York–based human rights organization, held a peaceful protest in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C.
During the protest, individuals from the Chinese Embassy allegedly physically attacked participants. The vehicle and projector equipment used by the activists were also damaged.
If confirmed, these incidents raise serious concerns about foreign interference, intimidation, and transnational repression carried out on U.S. soil by representatives or agents linked to the Chinese government.
We urge the FBI and other relevant U.S. authorities to investigate the incident, preserve available evidence, and determine whether any U.S. laws were violated.
