This and the Romney race are basically how we got Trump. Smart liberals hate when you toss this out in a univariate way. But, if EVERY candidate will be called Hitler no matter what they do - remember the Texan Bush speaking in perfect cadence to the NAACP - why NOT say "Fuck you" and run a ruthless ass-kicker?
I appreciate that a lot of liberals are implicitly conceding now that they did a smear campaign against George W. Bush that was mostly untrue to try to win the 2004 and 2008 elections. But, ya know, it doesn’t change the fact that you did that and our politics are worse for it.

Exactly. The left has libeled and smeared every person one inch to the right of them so ferociously and frequently that the insults have lost any meaning. One can’t simply disagree, people can’t choose to follow their own path, everyone must agree, believe and celebrate every leftists evil fantasy. Or you’re…….fill-in-the-blank insult. It’s actually refreshing that very few care about the insulting label anymore.

Truman called *Dewey* a fascist. This has been a go-to move for Dems for 70 years. One question is, why does this tactic still seem to work? Another is, why did it take so long to provoke a populist response?

100% The right finally got with the program, realized the same things would be said about ANYONE they ran…. And finally got a mean SOB. (Except Trump’s actually rather kind…I mean, he does hour long interviews with people he KNOWS hate his guts…I think he actually wants to be liked quite a bit.)

Whomever is the next Republican presidential candidate will be called worse than Trump. The next Republican candidate will be worse than that one. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.

Never Trumpers are oblivious to this as well because they are so far up the moral high ground to recognize the effect on the plebs.

Well Bush being Bush and Romney being Romney is also how we got to Trump.

Yes, also McCain in 2008. People got tired of shitty people calling them shitty people and wanted somebody who would attack back. Turning the other cheek and running consensus guys wasn't working. It isn't good but I understand it.

It’s always the “next up” Republican. It was Bush, then Romney “put y’all back in chains”, then obviously Trump, then in ‘22 when they thought Desantis was the next one up, they pivoted to him. This will continue for the foreseeable future unless there is a R that wins even a Bush Sr margin in ‘88. But we are a ways from that.

Moderate Democrats like John Kerry in 2004 were treated brutally too (remember the Swift Boat thing?), does that mean Republicans are to blame for the current rise of socialists?

If folks think Trump is a strong man, they have no idea. He is a timid, calm precursor to what will come if the elite continue to ignore the will of the people. What the elite in the West are doing is how you get Franco, Pinochet, et. al.

Clinton got his share of unfair abuse (and fair abuse). W-Bush got his share too, I think probably some unfair criticism but an entire tidal wave of fair criticism. He started a war knowingly under false pretenses. I just watched his 25 year retrospective on 9/11 and I'm reminded that we just absolutely cannot let someone of that low intelligence of either party be in power again. I don't even think he understands what happened during his own presidency. What was the smear exactly?

Short-term thinking like this got us where we are today. Dems won, but in the long run they got Trump.
