Palestinian colleagues are discussing why the conversation surrounding Ed Miliband and the miniscule sanctions (settlement trade ban) in the UK is almost exclusively focused upon the reaction and opinion of the Jewish community... rather than say what this means for Palestinians or perhaps even any detailed critical analysis. My view is that this is precisely the point; having any kind of substantive analysis provided to the general public would be a disaster for the UK and Israel... so instead we are directed to hold conversations surrounding how much criticism of Israel is (un)acceptable to our various Jewish communities. We are now talking about which Jews and Jewish groups support Ed Miliband and the settlement trade ban and which Jews and Jewish groups are against it. For those who still don't realise it... this is a clear cut example of a society that is poisoned by both antisemitism AND anti-Palestinian racism. By centering the views and positions of Jews and Jewish communities we are handing a win to the ruling classes who want us to be locked down into debating which Jews do and do not support. It also has the added consequence of making it seem like the government both seeks and requires the approval of British Jews before they take any substantive foreign policy decision regarding Israel and Palestine (do you need me to identify the specifics of this antisemitic trope?). All of this is a distraction from discussing what this means for Palestinians, how we can contribute to supporting Palestinians, and how we move forward as the United Kingdom in terms of finally upholding a smidgen of international law.
