However, most of it is discarded, contributing to pollution and lost value. If recovered, whey could contribute to food security, industrial applications, and circular economy objectives.  The hashtag#VALORISE project demonstrates that whey can be transformed into animal feed, functional foods, biotech products, and even biodegradable packaging. This study analyzed four circular business models adopted by Kenyan dairy processors: (i) ricotta cheese production, (ii) whey-based yogurt drinks, (iii) fruit-blended whey smoothies, and (iv) whey protein concentrate recovery, and revealed that only 0.45% of the 976,055 L of whey generated weekly is valorized. 🗓️ 14 April 2026 👩🏾‍🌾 👨🏾‍🌾 Farmers in Lari gathered for a Farmers Day hosted by the Lari Horticultural Farmers’ Cooperative Society (LHFCS), bringing together county leadership, extension officers and partners working across production, inputs and markets. Among those present were Chief Officer Benson Ndung’u, CECM for Agriculture, County Government of Kiambu, alongside stakeholders including Stella from FarmRise - Powered By Bayer, Joyce Gema from Tradecare, Linet, Safi Organics Ltd. and Caroline, a key off taker who joined to better understand where her produce comes from. The day centered on lessons from demo farm activities (Oct 2025 – Feb 2026), with a focus on soil preparation, nursery management, pest control and crop-specific practices for carrots, cabbage and potatoes. Farmers shared practical changes already underway, including improved soil preparation, raised nurseries and natural pest control methods like marigold planting and onion use. Key takeaways: 🔸 Start with understanding your farm conditions 🔸 Raised nurseries improve germination 🔸 Crop-specific management is critical 🔸 Integrated pest management reduces chemical use 🔸 Soil health shapes food quality and market trust 🔸 Stronger extension follow-up is needed The importance of food safety and market segmentation also came out strongly, alongside a key moment of exchange between farmers and buyers, reinforcing trust and transparency in the value chain. Looking ahead, LHFCS is focusing on structured planting, traceability, bulk input purchasing and farmer clustering to improve coordination, reduce costs and enhance market access. Yesterday, a team from the Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security (@AFNS_ACTS) programme at @ACTSNET paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Veterinary Services in Nakuru County to introduce the work of the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) and explore opportunities for collaboration within the county’s horticulture sector. During the meeting, we highlighted ACTS’ role in advancing policy-oriented research and delivering evidence-based interventions that harness science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development. We focused on our ongoing initiative to catalyse investment in sustainable cooling and cold chain systems to reduce post-harvest losses and open new market opportunities for smallholder farmers. Recognising Nakuru as a key horticultural production hub, we explored potential partnerships with the County Government to identify and strengthen horticultural cooperatives and SMEs. The conversation also emphasised how enhanced cold chain infrastructure can improve value chain efficiency, maintain produce quality, and enable farmers to access more competitive and reliable markets. We also discussed aligning these interventions with county priorities, strengthening institutional linkages, and creating an enabling environment through supportive policy frameworks and coordinated stakeholder engagement. 🌍 What does “impact” in climate adaptation really mean and how do we get there? This week in Cape Town, the CLARE Capacity Strengthening Hub (@ACTSNET & @PlanAdapt ) in partnership with @SouthSouthNorth are hosting the CLARE CS Hub Seasonal School that brings together researchers and practitioners to examine how adaptation research can move beyond knowledge generation to drive real-world change. The focus is on strengthening capacities to enhance the impact of adaptation research. At the heart of the discussions is a shift from producing outputs to shaping outcomes. Conversations are focusing on what effective adaptation looks like, as well as the systems, partnerships and pathways needed to translate research into action. There is also a growing emphasis on moving from defining impact to co-creating solutions. A shared understanding is forming that impact goes beyond reports and publications and is reflected in influence, relationships and lasting change over time. A timely reminder that meaningful climate adaptation is not just about what we know, but how that knowledge is applied, by whom and for whom. After a productive inception meeting in Naromoru, Nyeri, Kenya, the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), through the ACES #SPOKE programme, has officially partnered with Ustawi Afrika to launch the Try Before You Buy (TBYB) initiative to stimulate investment in sustainable cooling. This is the second community set to be supported by the project, following a successful pilot with the Lari Horticultural Cooperative Society in Kinale, Kiambu, Kenya.

🌱 Empowering Women in Agriculture: Voices from LARI Horticultural Cooperative 🗓️ Wednesday, 25 March 2026 - The Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security (@AFNS_ACTS ) team at ACTS engaged in a focused discussion with women farmers of the LARI Horticultural Farmers' Cooperative Society (LHFCS) in Lari Sub-county, County Government of Kiambu. The session, titled “Empowering LARI Horticulture Cooperative through Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI)”, was facilitated by Dr. Caroline Mbaya, Dorcas Kalele, Ph.D and Patience Mebo Ochieng. The conversation centered on one core question: what does it take for women to thrive in the agriculture value chain? The women shared their realities candidly, highlighting the barriers and inequalities that limit their full participation in agri-food systems. 🗣️ Key insights from the discussion: 🔸 Leadership & Decision-Making: "We are members — but when decisions are made, we are not in the room." Despite leading much of the on-groundwork, women’s voices are still often absent at the cooperative decision-making table. 🔸 Farming Realities: Daily challenges include access to quality inputs, unpredictable weather, water scarcity, limited land ownership and weak market linkages. Seasonal shifts and droughts threaten both harvests and households, while credit and land remain largely inaccessible. 🔸 Women’s Priorities: ✅ Hands-on skills training in their local language ✅ Agri-tech and digital tools to work smarter, reach markets and increase profitability ✅ Leadership and negotiation skills, practiced during the session to strengthen participation in cooperative decision-making The solutions identified by the participants reflect a clear understanding of their own needs, calling on organizations to provide the systems, training and support structures necessary for these women to assume leadership roles effectively. Following the discussions, A Women’s Advocacy Champions Platform was launched to strengthen collective action and ensure women’s representation within the cooperative. Day 1 of the Clean Energy Incubation Program Development Workshop at Safari Park Hotel was an intensive and collaborative success! Partners from @kcauniversity , @ACTSNET , @YouthFund_Ke and @IDRC_CRDI joined forces to address the structural gaps such as fragmented approaches and limited regulatory alignment,that often hinder clean energy SMEs in Kenya. Day 1's Strategic Milestones: A New Vision for Incubation: @carolineNtara (KCA) and @mourinechep (ACTS) set the stage by reflecting on past lessons to build a more resilient, evidence-based program. The 8-Month Entrepreneur Journey: The session moved beyond theory to map out specific phases, milestones, and outcomes that will guide enterprises from student-led ideas to scale-ready businesses. Curriculum Co-Development: Teams engaged in deep-dive working sessions to create tailored modules focusing on technical validation, financing, and market access. Digital Transformation: A standout "Expert Talk" by Erick Odipo (Silicon Overdrive) highlighted the power of AI and Cloud Computing in optimizing energy monitoring and driving data-driven growth. By the end of the day, the team consolidated a structured curriculum that ensures "who should be doing how much of what by when" is no longer a question, but a clear roadmap for our entrepreneurs. 🌱 Strengthening Local Agriculture through Collaboration and Policy Today, we paid a courtesy call to Minister Wilfred Mwenda Kiara, CECM, and Chief Officer Benson Ndung’u, CECM for Agriculture @KiambuCountyGov where we discussed the Lari Horticultural Farmers’ Cooperative Society (LHFCS), the county’s first horticulture cooperative focused on vegetable farming. The cooperative recently commissioned a cold chain facility that not only reduces post-harvest losses but also provides a sustainable business model for farmers. Our discussions explored strategies to optimize cold chain operations, expand market access to better align production with demand and ensure farmers earn fair and stable incomes while growing their market presence. We also discussed the importance of strengthening irrigation systems and building farmers’ capacity through targeted training and ongoing engagement with extension officers. In addition, we examined opportunities for public private partnerships to further support and scale the cooperative’s impact. The Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA), in collaboration with the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) is inviting applications for the Emerging Adaptation Professionals (EAP) Knowledge Catalyst Fellowship, hosted by the ACTS Pathways Academy @PathwaysACTS. This six-month Fellowship is designed to strengthen and elevate African research on climate adaptation and resilience, with a clear pathway to contributing to the IPCC AR7 Working Group II process on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation. If you are a postgraduate student, PhD candidate, postdoc, early-career researcher (within 5 years post-PhD), adjunct faculty or climate adaptation practitioner working in Africa, you are encouraged to apply. Fellowship Streams: 🔹 Cohort 1 – For researchers with draft manuscripts that can be completed within four months. Fellows will receive structured mentorship to bring their work to publication in peer-reviewed or open-access outlets. 🔹 Cohort 2 – For researchers with manuscripts already accepted for publication who require financial support for professional editing and/or publication fees. 🔹Synthesis teams working across geographies or disciplines are also welcome. 🌍 This week in Kilifi, the Blue Empowerment Project Team (County Government of Kilifi | Kwale County | Bahari CBO Network | @kirdi_kenya | @KmfriResearch| @ACTSNET | @KenyattaUni | Sea Moss Corporation LTD | ) is convening for a three-day engagement focused on implementation details, transition arrangements and follow-up actions under the theme: From Implementation to Legacy: Sustaining the Blue Empowerment Vision. The sessions bring together different workstreams to assess progress across technical implementation, community institutions, policy engagement, financing mechanisms and knowledge products. Over the three days, project teams, partners and community representatives have: 🔹 Reflected on the project journey and its impact 🔹Taken stock of achievements, lessons, and remaining priorities 🔹Strengthened sustainability pathways, including the Blue Empowerment Fund 🔹Planned for transition, community ownership and long-term continuity A key focus of the discussions is strengthening transition arrangements -particularly community ownership structures, sustainability pathways and follow-up mechanisms that support continued impact in coastal communities. 📣 Last week, the CLARE Programme Capacity Strengthening Hub (CS Hub), co-led by ACTS and @PlanAdapt, held a five-day Communication and Dissemination Learning Workshop in Diani, Kenya from 1 to 5 December building on a series of virtual sessions held earlier in the year. The workshop brought together researchers and practitioners from across the CLARE programme to strengthen how climate adaptation research is shared, understood and applied within different communities and decision-making spaces. Learning took place through a mix of lectures, policy-focused role play, group discussions, an excursion, practical communication activities and peer exchanges. The workshop also included a lively Marketplace Exchange featuring poster sessions from participating projects. Over the week, participants built their skills in several areas: 🌿Strategic communication 🤝 Co-creation and stakeholder engagement 📖 Storytelling and media work 🏛️ Policy and community-focused communication ⚖️ Gender equity and inclusion in dissemination Participants also visited the Blue Empowerment Project site in Kwale County, where they engaged with community groups in seaweed and fish value chains and observed communication practices in real settings. The visit included a stop at the Mwazaro SolCool Dry site to learn about solar-powered fish and seaweed processing, with insights from the project’s co-principal investigator, Dr. Linus Kosambo. We were equally honored to have Grace Nyambura from BBC Media Action, who highlighted the importance of involving journalists early to ensure accurate and context-aware storytelling. “When media come in at the end, they miss the full picture. Bring them in early so they grow with the story and tell it well.” ~Grace Macharia The week closed with group presentations and shared reflections on how participants plan to apply what they learned in their communication and dissemination work.
