It's a standoff for two reasons: 1) US success in the strait means Trump admin sees less reason to make concessions to reach a deal. 2) Iran's resistance to US econ/military pressure and continued ability to keep prices/costs high means Tehran similarly sees little reason to relax negotiating position.
Expensive oil that occasionally gets hit by a missile or drone hardly qualifies as normalization. Do yourself a favor and avoid narratives that suggest one side or the other is achieving its maximalist aims. This is a stalemate.

During the negotiations that wrapped up the Cuban missile crisis, Anastas mikoyan decided to pull even the tactical nukes out of Cuba, even though the US wasn’t aware of these and focused on missiles He saw Castro as too erratic and “too loud” to feel responsible leaving them

Time and again the Soviet realization during the crisis was that Castro wasn’t a reliable partner as he was too proud and erratic. They were horrified by Fidel’s proposal to martyr Cuban people to the cause of socialism if U.S. invaded

Nominally the excuse for pulling the missiles out was that Soviet law prohibited handing them over to other parties but this is apparently simply not true. Soviet law did not take a stance on it and archives reveal it was done in response to Fidel’s behavior throughout crisis

Syria was kind of an underrated early warning system for the kinds of ‘anti imperialist’ alt media ecosystem that would spend the next decade and a half promoting conspiracy theories and any authoritarian government or crank movement as long as it was anti-US
Aaron Maté once again claims the Syrian chemical weapons attack in Douma was a false flag: "The false flag I'm focused on and forever will be focused on is Douma, that was in Syria. I will stand by that forever as a false flag."

Lula's current finance minister, in debate with Flávio's econ advisor, argued a few weeks ago that Lula recognizes need for bitter fiscal medicine but insisted that the way to do it is gradually, with buy-in from all social sectors. Only Lula, he argues, capable of managing that
Investors are betting Brazil’s election-fueled rally has just begun — a wager that ultimately hinges on a fiscal overhaul markets have long demanded, but still know little about, @andradevini3 @gbellottiaze report bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

The US is a signatory to the Convention Against Torture. It was signed by Reagan and ratified and enacted into the Foreign Affairs Reform and Restructuring Act, which prohibits refoulement, meaning this is illegal under US law.

Historically the primary axis of Brazilian politics has been the upper class voting right and the working class voting left. This is still true, but for the 2nd election in a row Brazil has mirrored the global education polarization trend of working class voters trending right
Mirroring trends seen elsewhere in the world, Lula gained the most ground relative to Hadad on Sunday in richer, whiter parts of the country. Bolsonaro did worse in most of the country but still managed to outperformed his 2018 vote in the poorest and least white neighborhoods.

Update: In 2023 Cuban peso passed 200 to 1 USD In 2024 Cuban peso hovered between 300-400 to 1 USD Now, in 2026, the Cuban peso is now almost 800 pesos to the dollar.
When I arrived in Cuba two weeks ago the peso was 1:315. It is now 1:325. At 10 pesos of inflation a week it seems like we’re on track for 400 pesos to the dollar in a few months Remember, peso used to be 1:25 and official exchange is still only 1:125

And remember, these are street rates, not official exchange rates, which are (last I checked) still at 1:125, meaning that if you try to exchange at official rates you are losing almost 90% of the value of every dollar exchanged

“The prosecutor’s office said Manfred D. worked as Hanning’s chief of staff. After Hanning’s tenure at the BND, he went on to serve as chief of staff for several subsequent presidents of the BND from March 2012 until March 2026. … Both suspects are believed to have agreed, in the spring of 2010, to have Manfred D. continuously transmit valuable intelligence from the BND to Hanning “in exchange for remuneration.” “The current findings suggest that, over the years, Manfred D. provided Hanning with approximately 2,000 documents, many of which contained classified information to be used exclusively by the federal intelligence service for internal purposes, particularly for executive intelligence briefings,” the statement alleges. Hanning used the information in his private consulting work, the statement added. The office said “on one occasion, Hanning used classified intelligence provided by Manfred D. to draft an analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligence service.” apnews.com/article/germany-a…

Another way of reading this is that the govt is gutting civil servant salaries and other parts of Iran's (fairly large) social safety net in order to free resources for paying soldiers, building missiles, and funding proxies.
Excellent @nytimes article on the economic meltdown in Iran. The regime isn’t paying nurses and teachers who are quitting to survive. Pensioners are no longer getting their pensions. The blockade and US sanctions are exacting a heavy toll… nytimes.com/2026/10/04/world… via @NYTimes

The most interesting result of Brazil’s first round is not simply Flávio Bolsonaro’s 47.0% against Lula’s 45.2%, or that Bolsonarismo now seems capable of surviving Bolsonaro politically. 1/
