Russia’s failure is on them, not the US. Poland’s success is likewise to Poles’ credit, not ours.
Good thread on the failure of Russia’s economic transformation in the 1990s. I’d add that the same people gave the same advice to the Russians & Poles, with different results, leading to suspicion that the variable was less the advice than what the Russians & Poles did with it.

This is a poor take that suggests he doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's line that it was all the West's fault. Long🧵

This adds context to Trump's invitation to Putin to come to the G20. But that offer is still a meritless gift to Putin unless linked to his agreement to the (reported) US proposed partial ceasefire and reopening of the grain corridor. Odds of Russian manipulation are high, as ever.
The U.S. is pushing for 3 immediate steps in its effort to de-escalate the war in Ukraine, President Zelensky told me in an interview on Wednesday:

Good suggestions and, yes, it isn’t hard to arrange a Trump-Putin meeting on better terms than what the Trump administration has offered. Better yet, don’t offer Putin a meeting for nothing.
1) Putin should not be invited to the G20 meeting in the US.
2) if POTUS needs to meet Putin then it should occur outside the US eg in Turkey or Vietnam and POTUS should be accompanied by multiple senate confirmed officials in the meeting.
3) Xi should not be given a state dinner & red carpet treatment in DC. POTUS should meet Xi somewhere else and without the royal treatment.
none of this is hard. these are all unforced errors.

The burden will be on the Trump administration to show that weakening Putin’s isolation brings a commensurate benefit, like a ceasefire-in-place in Ukraine. Otherwise, it’s a gift to a tyrant & a sucker’s play.

One glaring omission here by Marco Rubio: He says nothing about the several Russian attacks on American companies in Ukraine that have been badly damaged or destroyed. They include: Coca-Cola. Boeing. Terminal Autonomy. Cargill. PepsiCo. Philip Morris. Mondelez. Bunge. Flex Ltd.
