Neither side has an incentive to say it out loud, but @RoyCooperNC is on track to be North Carolina's next U.S. Senator. And it's partly because of @WhatleyNC.
Is he a bad candidate? Yes, clearly. But the reasons go beyond candidate quality. Whatley is "Trump's guy." Trump shoved aside other potentially viable Republican candidates - @PatHarriganNC @MicheleMorrowNC etc - to make his guy the candidate.
Because personal loyalty to him, above absolutely everything else, is all that matters to Trump.
But now, Whatley is flailing. He's 8-12 points behind Cooper, depending on the poll you see. The polls are not "tightening." Whatley is not only going to lose, but he's going to get blown out of the water.
That obviously makes Trump look bad. And that's why he and his surrogates (like Vance) are coming down to do rallies in North Carolina. Trump's got skin in the game, and Whatley losing looks... bad.
North Carolina Republicans have hung a lot on the longstanding NC voter quirk of voting π΄R at the federal level, and π΅at the state level. That subgroup is small, but has been very meaningful for a long time. But the disastrous Trump 2 presidency might be what finally snaps the streak.
When North Carolina goes blue this year, it's going to break a lot of brains in #ncpol. It ain't magic, or written in the stars, that North Carolina will always split tickets. There's a slow realignment that's been changing our state's politics for many years now. We're going to see it this fall - mostly thanks to Donald Trump.
