Dang, if you can control your context Haiku is crazy cheap.

Haiku 5.5 is especially good value on tasks under 100,000 tokens, which make up around 90% of requests to our previous Haiku model.

Going from a top 25% location to Chapter 7 paints a very grim picture.
Confirmed three more closures of Crumbl locations, which brings my count of shutdowns to at least 60 so far this year. One of those three is in Louisville, and comes along with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing, which gives us a partial picture of an operator's finances. The operators in this case walked away from a location that was opened in 2024 and had 2.5 years remaining on its lease. According to court documents, it has $352,780 in liabilities compared with just $10,000 in assets, all in the form of signs and cookie-making equipment. There's no other assets listed, including inventory, receivables, deposits, etc. The equipment is the collateral for a $269,109, secured loan with Republic Bank. So the collateral is worth just 3.7 cents for every $1 of secured debt. The operator also said that it lost $17,000 operating the business this year. And it owes $69,000 to the landlord for those 2.5 years remaining on the lease. At one point, this was one of the top 25% of Crumbl locations and the operators were telling @NRNonline that they wanted a third location. You can check out the original NRN article with the operators here: nrn.com/restaurant-franchisi… And here's our look at Crumbl: restaurantbusinessonline.com…

As I've said repeatedly: geothermal is the Dark Horse of energy. The U.S. has massive geothermal resources and the most advanced oil industry on earth. Many of the drilling rigs, personnel, and technology employed in the Shale patch could quickly transition to Geothermal.
to all the geothermal believers out there, the flippening has come in NV Energy’s 2026 filing, 3 geothermal offers came in at $105–107/MWh, below the ~$114/MWh capacity-weighted average for 11 solar + bess offers in Nevada, of all the sunny places the 3 solar + bess projects NV Energy put forward in 2024 averaged ~$94/MWh, but this 2026 slate is pricier, e.g., Boulder Solar III’s levelized price jumped from ~$85/MWh to ~$125/MWh after permitting delays, land carrying costs, higher financing costs, and, of course, big, bad tariffs. could geothermal pull off a solar + wind circa 2010 move and scale faster to come down the cost curve? it now has a much longer tax-credit runway than new solar + wind projects (oh how the tables have turned), plus firm output and higher energy density (all true for nuclear too) and for the 24/7 solar crowd: the ~$114/MWh average covers solar paired mostly with 4-hour batteries, and we all know 12+ hours of storage would cost more and still wouldn’t cover multi-day gaps it might be time for more geothermal, people

Uber just paid $2.3 billion for ezCater....average order over $400 Ive seen this movie before. in 2015 Grubhub bought Restaurants on the Run with the same pitch, "we'll bring corporate catering to more customers" We were just starting our catering side back then, so we had a front row seat....order comes in at 7am due at 11, then a call center rep calls 3 times in an hour to change it while you're mid prep Thats not catering. thats a big rush order at a discount with extra chaos attached....and you never hear that name anymore Most of what i've seen run through these apps is the same thing....big rush orders, discounted, your staff gets slammed and your margin gets squeezed. and when the $500 lunch shows up missing the salads, in my experience it's the restaurant that eats the refund, not the app Real corporate catering is a relationship. the admin who books it is on the hook if it goes wrong....allergies, customizations, dock times, security check in. they dont want a middleman guessing, they want a name and a phone number Now picture a random gig driver trying to get a 40 person order through a loading dock and building security on a 15 minute window This is one channel i'll never touch For operators this deal changes one thing....Uber wants to own your catering customer, and the only defense is being the first name they find when they search. SEO every day, all day $UBER

Announcing tsc-rs (aka ts-rust), my complete rewrite of the Typescript compiler, type checker, and LSP, all in Rust. This is a project I've had agents working on for 5 months now. I burned ~$400k of Codex tokens and got nowhere. Burned ~$20k of Opus and got there in 2 weeks. I have not read a single line of the code. tsc-rs is an open source drop-in replacement for tsc, and it's available now.

It's pretty crazy how we went from LLMs not being able to reliably add or multiply to LLMs solving Field's Medal worthy problems in just three years.

A lot of people are wondering how the mathematical discoveries by @OpenAI are "useful". It's conceivable that they may help advance quantum computing which, when it matures, will lead to breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and material science.
This contains a shocking list of problems in quantum information, many-body physics and quantum computing, the field that are dear to my heart. There are too many, but let me pick the following. 1. Proof of area law in 2D. 2. Spin-one Haldane gap 3. Parity is not in QAC^0 4. Constant-error Aaronson-Kuperberg conjecture 5. Unitary VOAs generating conformal nets. Things are changing fast. I cannot even imagine what will happen over the next few months, let alone a year.

I just so happen to have the results from Regulation Bench...
Mistral 4 is pretty good at lawyer bench and cyber security bench, but give it's European heritage, one can only assume it's also good at regulation bench

Texas added a bunch of batteries to the grid and now it's so reliable that it doesn't have huge price swings like it used to just a few years ago. This is one of the ways to practically beat global warming in the sense that new technology is allowing us to weather the heat.

I agree with Theo's take here that this may become practical once 6.1 Sol is available on Ultrafast which, supposedly, is coming soon.
Astra Ultrafast is incredible. I love using it. It is a genuinely novel experience in a world of percentage point wins. I don't think you should use it.

As I've said several times in the past, LifeCos are where the proverbial "bodies" were buried this cycle.
Not sure why this isn't a bigger deal in the news: Florida just barred Atlantic Coast Life from selling new policies. South Carolina wants to take the insurer over. Illiquid assets + liquid liabilities: ~30% of its investments are private credit loans (hard to sell), and $2.6B in annuities can be cashed out penalty-free by 2028.

"To be free, one must be feared. And to be feared, one must be powerful." France reminds the world it still has cutting-edge assets

I'm surprised this took so long. Why is this only happening now? Most CMBS loans have a "minimum rent" provision which prevents landlords from renting space for less than a set amount. Cash buyers do not have to adhere to such provisions.
Rock Bottom Rent In Denver, Colorado $5/SF Symes Building 820 16th St. As previously posted a group is buying the property for $2.7M, 11% of its $24.5M price in 2018. Jake Malman said the steep discount means he will be able to charge some of downtown’s cheapest office rents, at $5 per square foot triple-net. “We just want to be a low cost provider in the office space and not spend the time and the resources to convert this to residential,” Malman said. “And the basis we’re buying it at and the rates we are targeting, we’re going to achieve a meaningful return.” Purchase comes after a residential conversion plan fell apart and the building went through foreclosure. 95,000 Square Feet Built 1906 100% Vacant #CommercialRealEstate denverpost.com/2026/10/02/de…

I can't believe they're using the same lame excuse again.
Russian Prosecutor General has reportedly found “Nazis” in the Baltic states and reinstated the need to protect Russian interests in the region. Sounds like quite similar rhetoric to Ukraine…
