This might be mean but... Maybe they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps? 🫩
Honest question. Let’s say we implement this. What do we do with the millions of seniors who poorly planned their retirement and survive mainly on their SS checks?

Dear young people - go vote. The only reason boomers can keep taking from you is because you don't vote like they do. Show up and vote in every single election
89% of American seniors support higher taxes on younger workers to protect current Social Security benefits, per YouGov poll.

I've been saying this for a while. The Doomers are a textbook doomsday cult. Every single criteria, from apocalyptic imagery, to secret knowledge, to the chosen few, to the final moral judgment, to the sense of urgency that overrides everything else. Every single criteria.
The AI Safety community / @AnthropicAI is millenarian movement. What is millenarianism? It's the belief that a cataclysm is coming On the one side is apocalypse On the other side is abundance And a select group of people need to guide humanity through Millenarianism has been around since the 2nd Century. thedispatch.com/article/cath…

Kids today might never understand that there was a time when you could go months without hearing about the president, thinking about politics, or feeling like the government was constantly failing you.

This is pathology. This is mental illness. No I'm not saying using an AI is mental illness. I am saying that if you have so pathologized a particular model from 2 years ago, that you think you need it for medical advice but aren't interested in using the frontier models... Then you are suffering from a mental illness. Some delusion or psychosis

Where the flip did this narrative come from that grandparents don’t help with grandkids? I’m a historian, and I can assure you, grandparents have been an integral part of child rearing for centuries. This β€œgrandparents don’t owe you shit” is a distinctly 21st century narrative.

Okay "renter," Grandma isn't your employee. 1. Hire a babysitter. 2. You asked. She said yes. It was a request, not an obligation. 3. Chasing kids around exhausted two parents in our 20s. Acting like a healthy 64 year old can't have less stamina than you is a remarkable combination of entitlement and cluelessness about aging. 4. She wants to be Grandma, not your unpaid disciplinarian. Seems reasonable. 5. She already had plans. Why exactly should your conference automatically outrank her life and commitments? 6. She literally told you to have a backup plan. That's not "bailing"; that's giving you advance warning so you can act like an adult and plan accordingly. And throwing "(boomer)" in front of "mom" doesn't strengthen your argument. It just makes the whole complaint sound petulant. Your mother raised her children. She isn't obligated to raise yours, or rearrange her life whenever you need childcare.

Extrapolating this out: We're going to need a lot more high level mathemeticians just to check the work coming out of frontier models. Higher education is going to be totally reformed to accomplish this end and similar job functions. The high-IQ job market is going to explode.

The worker-to-retiree ratio was 5:1 in the 1960s. Now it's 3:1. In 15 years, it'll be 2:1 - every married couple will have their very own personal retiree's Medicare and Social Security to fund. Why aren't young people having kids? They're paying for grandparents instead.

That would still make more sense. All throughout history the old have sacrificed to provide a better life for the young This is the first generation that demands that the youth sacrifice To provide a few more comfortable years to the old
If Congress passed a bill taxing 401Ks of people 65+ at even 1% of annual growth to give people 18 to 25 funds to start a family the Boomers would be (rightfully) outraged. "Why should my money go to a program I'll never get to benefit from?" they would say... and I would sigh.

If you consider watching your grandchildren to be babysitting. You're not a grandparent. We pay for babysitters, babysitters are people that don't want to be watching the child. Grandparents love watching the child. They want to watch the child. I don't see this any different than parents talking about babysitting their kids. You're not babysitting your grandkids. You're watching them. Your grandkids

Google Deepmind just broke chemistry.. They open-sourced a model that can invent completely new biology from scratch. It’s called β€œAlphaProtein Novo” It's an AI pipeline that designs brand new enzymes for "new-to-nature" chemical reactions that have never existed in any living organism. to put this in perspective.. standard protein ai models (like alphafold) answer the question "what shape will this protein have?". ap novo answers the question "can i make a protein that does this specific chemistry?". the results from the paper are actually terrifyingly good: the ai designed an enzyme to synthesize piperidines, which are a critical building block used in pharmaceuticals and materials. this designed enzyme inverted natural biases to achieve near-perfect regioselectivity. it produced the chemical building block 99x more often than the competing natural product. it also designed an enzyme to hydrolyze DEHP, which is a pervasive plastic environmental toxin. this plastic-eating ai enzyme was 14-fold more active at 90Β°C than at room temperature, and survived in 75% acetonitrile. meanwhile, natural enzymes completely failed and were entirely inactive under those exact same extreme conditions. these new ai-generated designs are up to 60% smaller than natural equivalents. because they are smaller, they have a much higher mass density of active sites. i am speechless.. this is the holy grail of synthetic biology. we don't have to wait millions of years for microbes to evolve enzymes that eat our pollution or build our drugs.. we can just compute them on a gpu today. the ai's success rate in finding functional designs actually matches or surpasses traditional natural sequence screening. and deepmind open-sourced the whole thing on github.
