When I was the Defence Minister, I was asked, “Can you do this?” I said, “Why not?” and accepted the challenge of flying in a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft. Before the flight in Jodhpur, Indian Air Force officers gave me excellent training on the situations I might encounter. Flying beyond the speed of sound was a completely different experience. The direction is unmistakable and India is moving from nomination to competition, and from public-sector exclusivity to a far more open and competitive defence industrial ecosystem. If we sustain this momentum, India can rapidly move from being one of the world’s largest defence markets to becoming one of its leading defence producers, innovators and exporters. This exercise, especially because Japanese fighters are operating from Indian soil for the first time is a major milestone in the history of our partnership. I distinctly remember during Tarang Shakti '24 when your team was here; I met them all in my capacity as Vice Chief. Unfortunately, your aircraft could not ferry over due to bad weather in Southeast Asia, so we missed that opportunity. But I am very happy that we have made up for it this time. As you mentioned, this reflects the deepening dimension of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between our two countries. There is a Sanskrit expression, 'Aapatsu Mitram', which means 'a friend in times of need.' I believe the spirit reflected in the relationship between the Indian Air Force and the Kōkū Jieitai is exactly that, a partnership built on mutual respect, professional trust, and a shared commitment to peace and stability."
