If America did establish a modern passenger train system, there would be INTENSE regret and nostalgia in certain quarters for the "Old Amtrak Experience."
Amtrak is an "Experience in Leisure." You read, you dine, you drink, you converse in the lounge or watch America pass from the observation car. You do eventually reach the destination, but it's not for the anxious or pressured.

People already extol the virtue of long Amtrak trips in how it allows you to enjoy the landscape at a leisurely pace. They would absolutely be enraged if those routes become capable of 200mph

I've taken the Amtrak between Chicago and NYC. It's delightful. You follow the Great Lakes and the go down the Hudson. Most of the ride is along the water.

I paid $1K for two Amtrak tickets from DC to New York a few months back. I wouldn’t miss that.

I can imagine we keep the Amtraks similar to how JR runs overnight or luxury or slow trains on the non HSR tracks

Thats the thing. If we did build a high speed train across America, many current Amtrak riders wouldnt like it because it would be too fast. But other people wouldnt ride it, because a plane ride would still be faster
